Feeling Guilty About Lethargy During Pregnancy

Hi...so, I'm about 5 months pregnant with my third boy. It's been a long 5 months! For the first four, I had extreme bouts of nausea and vomiting that led me to hospital stays several times. I've been really tired, even more than with my first two and it's letting up some now. About mid-afternoon, I still feel like I need a nap and that's after a full night of sleep. They've checked all of my vitamin and hormone levels and those were all fine.

It's hard having been so active prior to pregnancy (running marathons, working, brining kids to the park, bicycling, going to the gym...etc.). Now, I just want to sit still ALL THE TIME! I feel bad for my husband and kids that I really can't keep up anymore. Have you ever been dreadfully tired?

What can I do next?

I remember this. My 2nd pregnancy was much harder on me than my first. The first time, I would come home from work and lay down for a nap. I couldn't do that with the second since I was busy running after a toddler. I can remember not having done anything, but still being completely exhausted. Just rest when you can...

This is your body telling you what your body needs. Listen to it. This is not a race, this is a baby your body is making..

For your health and the health of THIS baby, you need to rest.

This falls in the normal range. You are older, your body has already been through other pregnancies and each one can be very different. Did you know, it can take a woman's body up to 7 years to totally recover from a pregnancy?

Add to that all the things you do to push your body.. and at some point, your body is going to say hey. I need a rest.

Your husband and children should be honored to allow you to rest and take care of this new member.. Just be honest. "Mom is tired so we are going to have a quiet time while I nap."

They will be sharing you soon anyway, they might as well get started now.

My doctor told me that being a pregnant body works SO hard that it's like walking up a flight of steps ALL the time. So please give yourself a break here.

Rocky, so could have written this post. It helps to have an understanding husband. Hopefully this is just self induced guilt. Its temporary and you may still get a little energy back in your second and third trimester. Crazy as it sounds, my first trimester nausea lasts well into second trimester. I get a little energy back at the latter end of 2nd trimester and first part of third. Hopefully you will have a few weeks soon to catch up, and have some fun with your family before you get really big. Remember its a temporary condition.

I only have one child and I was in my 40's when I had her. I was absolutely exhausted the entire pregnancy and nauseated for the first three months. I couldn't have handled other children at all...thank heavens I only had one. Don't feel guilty, your body is telling you that you need to rest.

Pregnancy is h*** o* a body!!

Oh, yes. Brings back memories.

If it will make you feel better about it, talk with your obstetrician. All other things being equal, your body is tired because it is working VERY hard at taking care of this new baby as he/she grows! There's no reason to feel guilty about that!

I took a nap or an hour rest every day with my third pregnancy. I had too.

I also gave up kickboxing early, before 20 weeks. I was just too tired, so I stayed in bed rather than working out.

I drank a lot of tea.

Please let the guilt go. Being pregnant means you're growing another little human being, and he is taking everything that he needs from you. Give yourself a break, please, and rest when you need to. Your family will survive. My second pregnancy (in my 40s) was rough, it just meant that first child and dh had more relaxation time - but it was only temporary. I could barely handle even the most mundane daily activites. Follow your instincts. Increase your iron slightly if you can, and rest whenever possible. Your body needs it. Best wishes to you and hugs! You're not alone.

Yes, the 4th one was quite bad. I was on the couch all day...kids ran around. I did nothing. At all. For a few months. I think this is really hard and I don't know how people do it, with other kids. I realize I survived, but we didn't function as a family at that time. House was trashed.

You're pregnant chasing around two small children. Of course you're tired. Why would you feel guilty about that?

Could be normal, could be anemia. Have a quick blood test next visit and take your vitamins. You have to do what your body demands. You are making a baby. When your H or your kids can do that, then pamper them, untill then, you win. Take a nap.
