my 3 yr old daughter has some eye discharge out of one eye. it has been going on off and on for 4 days. she has been swimming alot where she opens her eyes under water. she has been doing a swim refresher at the YMCA, and about 30 min after she complained of her eyes hurting. the swim teacher said the water levels test out fine. I don't know if anyone has any suggestions what this could be if it may be related to the pool or just coincidence and what type of treatment ideas can you give me. home remedies appreciated. tonight I rinsed her eye with a warm salt water solution. then she went to bed and I told her to close her eyes. would you call the doctor about this. she only complains now and then. she is doing her swim refresher every day at about 4:00. she complained soon after the lesson and I just told her to close her eyes in the car, then she didn't mention it until bed time, but there was some discharge then.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went ahead and took her to the pediatrician. he said she did have conjunctivitis but of course you can't tell whether it is a virus or bactirial. so he just treats it. we got a script for vigamox. expensive stuff without insurance. it's an antibiotic eye drop. it should get rid of whatever it is. if it is viral it will run it's course. the Y is in Bradenton on 59th street, but that is interesting to know. as a freind mentioned her eyes aren't that red but as her mom, I notice it. she takes the drops really well. she lets me do it and hold her eyes open to get the drop in. thank you for your responses. it is nerve wracking knowing she will be in the pool every day probably for the next few months and I don't want the pool water to irritate her eyes all the time. the doc said it should be fine as long as the water is good.

Hi
I would suggest taking her to an optometrist rather than the doctor. One of our friends is an optometrist. He suggested we shouldn't take eye problems to an MD but rather an eye doctor - after all that is what they are trained in.

The water / chemical levels are likely fine. She could have easily picked up a virus from pool water too, maybe pink eye.

In any case it will likely be easily fixed up with some professional input.

I use a natural remedy called Occuheal that I get from my naturopath.
Hope it gets better soon.

My daughter just had pink eye, she woke up in the middle of the night crying in pain and rubbing her eye, of course it was a weekend and had to take her to All Children’s, they diagnosed with pink eye, highly contagious, and treated with eye drops , not knowing whether it was caused from viral or bacterial . I followed up w/reg doctor and he gave her oral antibiotics as well, because it was so swollen. He also checked for possible scratch on eye, discharge usually indicates bacterial though my daughter had none, she was better in three days. The pink eye that caused your Childs eye infection sounds more like environmental/ allergies pink eye. Since you mentioned swimming in a chlorine pool before the episode. I would say she is having an allergy to the chlorine.

Which YMCA were you at? My mother took my kids swimming at the Campo Y and got an eye infection a day or so later. She went to the opthomologist and is using medicated drops.

My son had more rounds of pink I than I can number.
(he doesnt anymore, at 16).

At 3, he LOVED goggles
and was VERY CAREFUL to use only his own
(protecting him from what others had)
and was instructed NOT to share them.
Sometimes that part was tough,
but it worked to minimize exposure.

I work with the metaphysics of things,
and once he addressed some spiritual things
he needed to look at clearly, the eyes were fine.

In the future you may want to go directly to an eye doctor instead of the MD. My son had a reaction to chlorine once where his eye looked aweful, but it was just a bit of an inflammation that occured. We saw Dr. Schulz on Little Road in New Port Richey. He was wonderful. He gave us a free sample of drops and it cleared it right up.
