Expresso or Maple Cabinets?

Hi Moms,

I just had to pick our kitchen cabinets and I wanted Maple but the dark wood floor option matched best with the Expresso cabinetry. Based on the interior designer's recommendation we selected expresso but I worry it will be too dark of a color with the dark wood floors. My husband is happy and I think the colors match great...I just keep worrying that the Expresso and dark wood floors will darken the main floor. The home is really open but I still worry. Although none of you can see the home, do you have any feedback? Perhaps some of your homes are similar and look great???

Adding we did select light colored corian countertops and the walls are a light color too. These colors match great so no worries there ;o)

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your input, I greatly appreciated it!!! I have decided to stay with the Expresso. I'm still in the window to make the change but I have decided to stick with it. Thanks!

I love espresso cabinets. Don't know if there is contrast with the floor or not. We have a small dark kitchen and just remodeled - we went with Antique White cabinets - and a light granite - we have a neutral beige tile floor already. We painted the walls a warm color for contrast - it looks 100X different with just those small changes! Color can really change a room!!!

Interior schemes, do not have to be matchy-matchy-poo.... as far as flooring and cabinets.

Now, no matter what, YOU have to be pleased with your own choices.

There are MANY kitchens, with dark cabinetry and light flooring.
Also many different color schemes/paint color/appliance finishes/flooring/lighting, etc. All these impact a rooms ambiance.

Men tend to like 'dark' wood finishes... because it seems more masculine to them.
Or it can appear more 'formal'. Depending on the overall style of your interior... modern/country/urban/industrial/cottage/Deco etc

So, now, you need to feel at peace with your choice.. if you are not.. then change it before it is ordered.

all the best,
Susan

I love the dark cabinets - I think they look rich. We have off-white cabinets in our house and I hate them - that look is so yesterday. i have looked at very expensive new homes in our area and all these homes have the dark cabinets and look very classic. So go with it and i think you'll be very pleased with the look you have chosen.

My mother's house sounds a lot like this...she just finished redecorating and I believe her cabinets colors were also called Expresso...she too has the dark floor and it looks B-E-A-U-tiful!

Sounds wonderful to me! We had lighter flooring so we went with the maple cabinets, even though I wanted the darker ones.

Accents can make a WORLD of difference in how warm and inviting vs. dark and cavernous it feels.... Try warm "happy" colors for your kitchen towels and pot holders and a couple of bright yellow potted flowers or something like that. You could even do something like that with the walls, or any window treatments. Or, these days, even over the bar lighting pendants... instead of something dark and plain.

Try to imagine out of the box. It might not be for you, but you might hit on something you would LOVE.

Jennifer-
I work in a flooring firm and so many people feel like they have to match their surfaces, walls, cabinets, flooring, etc. All you have to do is coordinate, just like your outfits. Sometimes contrasting colors are beautiful together. With the dark colors together I would make sure your kitchen has lots of natural light.

I heard from more than one designer-type person that dark kitchens are out & lighter kitchens are in. I'm not sure if it's true. Also, men tend to like darker, so I'm not entirely surprised your husband likes the dark & dark.

A dark floor and dark cabinets is a lot of darkness. Hopefully your kitchen is large with a lot of light.

Things don't necessarily need to "match." It depends on a lot of variables, but maple cabinets could go with dark flooring.

However, it sounds like you have already chosen the espresso, so it's a moot point.

Often, if you have such dark colors on the flooring and cabinetry, you will want to paint a richer, darker color on the walls, or there will be too much contrast. You might think a light color is necessary, but you will be surprised how much better a darker color will look. Just make sure you have really good lighting.

It depends on what your wall/ back splash color is.
It will prob be fine, I want to redo our kitchen like that with the dark cabinets and dark floor. Those richer tones really warm up a kitchen.

There is a set of model homes that have a darker paint on the walls, dark flooring and dark cabinets and yes, it appears cave-like even with the 30' ceilings. That's me though...I like dark wood as an accent. I have dark table and chairs, etc but a light kitchen.

Are there any model homes near you where you can see the color combos in action? It may help to visualize how it will look. GL!!

If you could see my builder's grade cabinets, you would know how incredibly jealous I am of you right now!! I think it sounds very sophisticated and beautiful. What color/type of countertops are you going to use?

I watch entirely too much HGTV and what you have described I have seen on some shows. I think you will be very happy and surprised at how "warm" these dark woods will feel. And hey, hubby is happy! No worries!
