I plan to deliver at Overland Park Regional (only Level III NICU) and am interested in other moms experiences and advice. I am also in need of a pediatrician that has rights there as my kids' pediatrician does not. Any of you ladies have a great pediatrician that you would recommend?

What can I do next?

Dr. Don Vannaman...he is the best pediatrician at Overland Park Regional...he was first a pharmacist, then went back to school to become a pediatrician. I love the fact that he is so in tune to the drugs and will NOT give them to children for any old reason!

I have heard great things about Overland Park--many friends have delivered there. I also needed a level III NICU and delivered at St. Luke's on the Plaza (they're actually a level IIIb--a little more advanced than a III). My son had to be transferred to Children's Mercy soon after birth and I wanted to be as close as possible. Their NICU was great for the short time he was in it (they intubated him and started him on prostin--for heart).

If your child has to be moved to Children's Mercy, s/he is in excellent hands! As far as a pediatrician, ask your OB. You'll probably want one that specializes in critical care.

Best of Luck! Babies are so strong:)

Hi, I have an answer for the 2nd part of your question. I have a pediatrician I've been using for the last 6 years that I am very happy with and has an office right accross the street from OP Regional (yes, they have rights there). Her name is Mary Jo Flint and she is part of Pediatric Professionals Assoc group @ 10600 Qiviria ###-###-####, www.ppadocs.com. Great doctor who seems to really care about kids and never makes you feel rushed or silly for asking all kinds of questions. I've also had great experiences with Dr. Baraban & Dr. Heaphy there. I've used their walk-in clinic and I've also called same day with a sick child and have always got an appointment that day. Never waited for more than 10 minutes in the waiting room and all the people that work there are really nice. Only Doc not too crazy about is Dr. Etzenhouser. Nice and I'm sure very good, but not real 'kid' friendly and I've had to wait a long time in his exam room (which with small kids can be very frustrating!).
Hope this helped! L.

I had all four of my daughters at Overland Park Regional. We were happy with our experiences. We chose Dr. Khurana. His office is located off of 87th and Marshall Dr. It used to be called Encompass Medical Group and I'm not sure what it's called now. I know he still practices b/c a co-worker of mine still uses him. He is thorough and never got me worried if I didn't need to be. Good luck and Congratulations!

I had my daughter there almost 5 yrs. ago, and I was very happy. My dr. was/is Dr. Tom Kettler from College Park Family Care Center. They have offices all over the one I go to is in Stanley, but I know he practices in other offices as well. He is also a family dr. which can care for the whole family which is great, having all of the doctor's rolled into one. Good luck!

My last daughter was supposed to be a home birth but due to a complication I had to be sent immediately to OP Regional where my mid-wife had her back-up physician. They were wonderful as far as the delivery was concerned. Considering I had never wanted a hospital birth in the first place and was there under duress...lol It was not the calm home-birth I was planning, but they were very efficient and confident in what they were doing. It was not very busy when I had her, so I am not sure how they are when they get busy and I had no students during my stay there. Both of my girls are patients of Dr. David B. Yu at Heartland Primary Care. He came after the delivery and was able to do all of her care for us. We love him for the girls.

I had my first baby there last August, and I agree that it was VERY busy...the mother/baby section was actually full so we got moved to the overflow area in the antepartum (sp?) section. It is a good hospital though, and very nice, it just was a busy time. I'm having baby #2 there in January and am hoping that there aren't as many babies being born at that time. :) Our pediatrician is Dr. Lance Miller, and he is a part of Preferred Pediatrics which is located in the Doctor's Medical Building right next to OPRMC. He is SO nice, patient, and really takes his time. I highly recommend him!!

I had 3 kids there and was very happy with everything. I would take the tour so you are familiar with were everything is.
As far as a pediatrician I reccomend Child Care Limited. Dr. Patty Daniels is a great doctor from the practice but I think you would be happy with a lot of the doctors in the practice.

Good luck

I delivered both my boys there, and had a really good experience. I loved the whole staff especially the nurses. I would recommend when you go to do your pre-registration to ask to not get med students. My first delivery there-I had issues with my epidural, come to find out a med student did it, other than that I had very good expriences.
As far as a pediatrician I would try Dr Stuppy or Dr Mellick at Pediatric Partners ###-###-####.

I recently delivered @OPRMC as well and used Dr.Khurana as my pediatrician there. He is wonderful! As far as the hospital goes............they were very busy when we were there, all mother/baby rooms were full and I felt like we really got lost in the shuffle. This was my first baby and we requested a visit from the lactation consultant right away and she did not come until the last day before we were leaving. Consequently, this period in the hospital, when I thought that the baby was feeding...she was not. So, we had some jaundice issues, and it was not a great experience for a first baby. Everyone was very nice, but there was not much personal attention, because everyone was always so busy.

Our son was born there 9 years ago (wow!) and they were fabulous. My father-in-law is an ob/gyn & highly recommended them (ok, he had priviliges there too so could come see us anytime). We unsuccessfully tried a VBAC only to deliver thru c-section but the staff was great. We felt very comfortable & never "freaked out" even though it was a rather scary situation. They were such pros!

As for a pediatrician, we love Aundria Speropoulos at Child Care Ltd at St Joseph Medical Center ###-###-####). I don't know if she's on staff at OPRMC tho. Good luck!
