NICU Follow-Up Clinic

I need some help... I'm a mom on a mission to get my son seen by the right doctor/doctors!!! Heres my LONG story: My twins were born 8 weeks early and in the NICU for 4 weeks (Intubated, CPap, Oxygen at home). They were born early in San Diego and in the NICU there. As my previous posts have stated, one of my twins continues to have chronic breathing problems. Since we came back to KC quickly after being released by the NICU, our twins were never seen at a NICU Follow-Up Clinic. I'm starting to genuinely believe that my son's respritory issues all stem back to his troubles with his lungs and his NICU days. I don't feel my current pediatrician is specialized in preemie care and all the issues that can come from being born so early. So... I've been calling today trying to get my son into a NICU Follow Up Clinic even if they were not in the NICU here. KUMED Center is looking into right now and is to call me back. Are there any other NICU Follow Up Clinics you can recommend?

What can I do next?

J.,
I'm an NNP at Overland Park Regional Medical Center and what you are describing is not an uncommon event for preemies with the history of respiratory distress, as you describe. I can understand your concern and believe they should be seen by a neonatologist, as well as your pediatrician for routine pediatric care. The hospitals I am aware of the have the NICU follow up clinics are CMH, KU and OPRMC. I would call and get in touch with the NICU follow up clinic at one of these facilities. You will most likely need to provide a copy of the medical record or the NICU discarge summary so the physician can review the specific clinical issues and treatments of you children. If I can assist in any way let me know. Doug

I just read today that infants born before labor has begun are four times more likely to develop persistent pulmonary hypertension, a potentially life-threatening condition.
Mainly, I say trust your instincts and find the specialist you need.

Well, KC's Children's Mercy is in your backyard but if you want another opinion beyond them, I would go to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. They specialize in multiple births and preemies.

My brother is an NICU nurse at Overland Park Regional Hospital. Their NICU unit has a really good reputation. You might want to contact Overland Park Regional for a follow up clinic referral.

J.. 2 of my 3 childern were premies. They were born at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. My current Pediatriction is thru KU MedWest off of 1-435 and Midland Drive. I know when I have had troubles with my childern if they need a specialist she refers me to Childern's Mercy Hospital. Even for after hours care.
At Ku Med Center if you go thru their peds department you will have alot of interns or residents so u might not ever see your childs dr or have different dr everytime.
Ku Medwest Peds department i've been with them for almost 8 years and never had a resident or intern look at my child.

I might suggest you call Childern's Mercy. I hope this helps

My baby spent 2 1/2 weeks at Children's Mercy, and I second a recomendation to try there. The people there were wonderful, and we still go to the endocrine clinic for our specialist visits.
