Excessive Spit-up - Umatilla,OR

My youngest daughter is 6mo. old and has always been prone to spitting up, more than my older 2 anyway, but it was never so much that I was concerned about reflux or anything. I thought it would get better by 4-6mo. (like everything I read said it would) but as soon as she turned 6mo, it got worse. After every time I nurse her she spits up off and on for quite awhile and alot of the time she tries to catch it. i will hear her gulping to try to keep it from coming up...sometimes successful, sometimes not. For the first couple of days she didn't seemed bothered by it, so I wasn't all that bothered other than the clean up, but today she gives me a little wimper after the gulping sesson like she is tired of doing it or something. (which I don't blame her. ;)) Does anyone have any experience with this? If this is just a normal kind of thing I don't want to have to taker her to the Dr., but if it's a concerning thing I would definately make an appointment, I just wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen with their own kiddos! :) Oh and she hasn't started her solids yet, we were waiting till next week after moving to a new house. (if that info helps at all. :)

What can I do next?

I would have reflux or gerd ruled out before starting solids ... if there is an issue solids are harder to spit up than bmilk. My son had reflux and his medication helped ... bonus he grew out of it around 15months and we stopped medicating at 12mo able to control it via diet.

My daughter spit up All The Time until she was 9 months old. Then it stopped. She wasn't in any pain or discomfort and kept growing like crazy, so we just made sure we had lots of rags handy.

I would suggest trying just a bit of solid food just to see if it would help. It may or may not.

Well if she is just a "happy spitter" then no problem but if it is affecting her eating or causing any distress I would go to the doctor. Putting her on more solid food should sure help but the problem could still continue while she is still eating liquids.

when my son was born he did this for about his whole 1st year. the little flappy thing in the trachea wasn't developed enough. he spit up so much that it looked like he wasn't getting anything to eat. my boy grew out of it. but if you are concerned talk to the pedi the next time you have an appointment.

I would definetly have that checked out esp. if it seems like she is trying to stop it.... My sons acid reflux went diagnosised because of lack of all of the normal symptoms....

If she's on formula, I'd switch to a soy-based one for three days or so and see if that helps. If she's BF, you'll have to take yourself off dairy for at least a week.

There's a strong connection between GERD and milk allergy. Worth Googling. My son had/has both. Mostly outgrown now at age 4, but still periodic issues. Good luck.

Many babies are not fully developed in this area until they are 12-15 months old. The problem with acid reflux is that it can get worse over time....meaning she may have been happy thus far, but the lining of her esophagus and throat may have been exposed to the excess acid backing up for quite some time, and it may finally getting to be painful for her due to the burning of the back of the throat. If this is the case, she will most likely need to get put on acid reflux medicine to help with this until she is a little older (when her body has had time to completely develop).

I would call your doctor's office. Explain that you recently had her 6 month well-check (presumably?), but you forgot to mention her excess spitting up, etc. Ask if they will prescribe a medicine for your daughter without you having to come in (chances are you'll be back in for her 9 mo well-check, and they can see how the progress is at that point).

Both of my children were GERD babies. My son was on prevacid for probably 12-15 months of age. My daughter started out on Zantac, and then we ended up switching her to prevacid after a couple of months, because the Zantac wasn't working for her. She is now 14 months old and has been off of all acid reflux medicines for 2 months.

**Also, keep in mind that this medicine is not going to stop the spitting up. It should help quite a bit, but your daughter will still spit up some. The difference is that the amount of painful acid in the spit up will not be quite as potent as before.

You live in Oregon and in a backwater community. Call OHSU and get some information from the Call a Nurse or the pediatric department. You may have to take her there for help with her condition. There are many problems that present this way including milk allergy and Celiac disease.

Two of my kiddos spit up an amazing amount of breastmilk until they were both 9 months, then they stopped. The other kiddo had an aversion to texture, so starting at 9 months through 18, she would spew if food wasn't completely pureed. Guess it was a case of 'be careful what you wish for', as I'd take spit up over puke any day! The 2 who spit up grew great and had no issues, didn't have them on any meds and no amount of my varying my diet changed their condition (and boy, did I try!)
Good luck.

she could be allergic to something you are eating or drinking. could be reflux or GERD. i'd make an appt just to be sure. even if not reflux maybe the pedi could give you an idea over the phone or in person of what to cut from your diet to check for allergies.
