My husband is wanting to purchase an English Mastiff for our family dog. I have heard these dogs druel and slobber alot. My husband says they don't. If anyone has owned or been around one of these dogs to see this for themself please let me know. Shedding is tolerable, but drueling is not.

What can I do next?

I am a mother of 8 and the english mastiffs are the best dogs ever! I own 2, a fawn and an apricot. Both weigh in at 140 - 180 lbs at 8 months old. I will be breeding them in 18 months. Great dogs, protectors, droolers yes when they drink water and eat human food. Oh well, i still love them!!

I am a veterinarian and I can tell you first hand that English Mastiffs are wonderful family dogs. They are great with kids and are just gentle giants, but they are going to drool!!! Your husband is probably hoping you will be so attached after you realize the amount of drool that you won't care, but there will be drool. They are great dogs though!!

My sister-in-law got an American Mastiff (I know it's a slightly different breed, but still huge) and she's been some trouble. I don't know about the drooling, but she's only 5 or 6 years old and has terrible joint problems, and has gone from a big playful pup to being irritable, and not safe to have around the children.

My SIL has one. It's only 3 yrs old & it's HUGE & DRUELS!!! It was a wonderful dog until their older dog died & now this one has taken control of the house & I can no longer have my girls around it. She growls & is very mean. So strange how they change personalities so fast.

My friend has one and it is a big drooler. He is just gigantic in general think 150-175 lbs. He is as sweet as he can be, but my goodness she said she makes her husband bathe him because he is too big for her to handle .
I mean if you are into big dogs thats okay but he is alot of work .

Great dogs! Our English Mastiff is 4 and a half, and we love him.
He doens't druel at all really, after he drinks a bowl of water he will a little...but that is the one thing that I didn't want in a dog and it doens't bother me. He does however shed...quite a bit. We try to keep him brushed every few days to keep that minimal.
Even though he is a 175 pound dog he stays inside most of the time. We have a 3 year old daughter who thinks he is sometimes a horse. He is very protectiive of her and us. They are great with kids, very calm, and lazy!
But I would definately reccomend them!

We have an english mastiff. They barely shed, they are incredibly lazy, and very protective. They are large... Our's is still a puppy at almost 200 pounds (and only 28 months old!) but he is a great dog! We haven't had much trouble with chewing, he house trained very quickly, and is so concerned about pleasing us that we rarely have trouble with him acting up in the house. He does drool, though. A lot after he drinks. We keep a towel nearby to wipe his face after he visits the water bowl and after we dry him off, he's no worse than a normal dog. i have a friend that has two and they didn't drool too bad but they shed so much. they are sweet dogs but depending on your yard size, their poop is enormous and they can break your foot by accidently stepping on it. they really don;t like the texas heat.

I grew up with a bull mastiff & a Neapolitan mastiff, & they both drooled ridiculously. It's just the dog...they all do it.

English Mastiffs do drool a lot and they smell. We were going to get one, but we opted for an American Bulldog. Love him tons and he doesn't drool. We got ours at: http://www.texastornado.us/ His name is Monster and he is very loving with our 3 month old.
