ok so i now know that it probably would have been best if i would have taken my little princess when she was a bitty baby to get her ears pierced so that she couldn't move or fuss but i didnt bc i was too scared to hurt her and i wanted to wait until she was old enough to show me that she was hurting if any problems arose. She is now 21 months and i think she is ready. My question is to any of you who got your daughters' ears pierced aroung this age-where did you take her, how did you distract her, how long did the pain last and were there any complications? Thanks in advance ladies!

What can I do next?

Why not just wait until SHE wants to get her ears pierced? She may not ever even want to wear earrings, yet you are not giving her a choice if you pierce her ears. Personally, I plan on waiting until my daughter is old enough to make that decision on her own.

I know you asked for mother's who had their child's ears done as baby. I waited until my daughter said she wanted to get them done. We went on her 5th birthday, I'm glad I waited we made a day of it. I got them done at Claire's and they had two girls at the same time (2 guns of course). However, the one girl's gun jammed up and got stuck in her ear. My daughter even at age 5, didn't scream and cry. She's always held her emotions in around others, her little eye just had tear falling down.
Her ears are a little sensitive and she can only wear 14c. She was fine until she took her studs out and try to wear some of the earrings we got there. She got an infection. She stop wearing them for a few years and then I just had them re-done when she was in 6th grade. She's very careful now about what earrings she puts in and cleans them very good.

Your little princess will most likely cry for a bit, but the pain will go away. I would let her pick out a pair of earrings for later, or let her hold them when they do it, try to have two girls do it at the same time. She might now want them to do the second because the first one will hurt her. I have a 2 year old boy, and I don't think he'd sit still after getting hurt one time, let alone twice...

My girls got theirs done in July. They are 3 1/2. They kept telling me that they wanted earrings like mama's so I took them to Claire's. They had 2 ladies so that they could do both ears at the same time. One cried for about 30 seconds and the other didn't cry at all. The main thing is you have to clean them 3x's a day for 6wks-that got a little old. Other than making sure the earrings were cleaned and stayed in there were no major issues.

Hi J., I have always been surprised at what a controversial issue this can be. I have a mixed family of Caucasian and Hispanic. It is very common for Hispanic families to pierce baby girls ears right away and I decided that was fine with me for 2 reasons...
1) my pedi said it was perfectly fine after 4 mo shots.
2) I got mine done when I was 5 because I wanted them and was pretty traumatized because I was old enough to know what was coming and let it get me worked up.
I was surprised at one side of my family and how many strong opinions they had about this waiting to let the child decide and how I would be a horrible Mother for doing this to her rather than letting her decide.
I have to say I think it is totally fine to wait but I don't think that should be the reason you wait. I have yet to have one friend in my whole life tell me that they wish there mother had not pierced there ears or that they where mad at there mother about that. I think that is a bit of a ridiculous point as well because if we really want to wait for them to decide we should most likely wait until they are an adult. I am sure a lot of 5 or 7 yr olds would also like a tattoo of a fairy princess or pink hair. My 7 yr old niece wanted to ware her rainboots and a supergirl outfit to a formal dinner.
O.k. so again I am not saying it is bad to wait in any way I just cannot agree with this logic of let them decide what they want to do to there body unless we are actually waiting until there brain is fully developed and able to make a decision on there own as an adult. I think it would be a more reasonable stance to say I just feel like my daughter is too young until whatever age not let her decide.
My daughter was 5 months and an otherwise fussy baby but it was no big deal at all. We went to Libby Lu and they did one at a time and we gave her a bottle right after. She barley even cried and has never had any trouble.
Sorry I went off a little on this but I hope you make the decision that is right for you and your daughter and don't let anyone guilt you one way or the other. Good luck! I hope you will let us know what you decide.

I have not done this, but my Ped's office will pierce ears. I do know they do both ears at the same time. The office is located at Plano Presby Hospital.

I waited to let my now 13 yr old daughter decide if she wanted her ears pierced or not. At 1 point she wanted them and I took her to get them done. She had a couple of issues and chose to let them grow back. That was about 2 yrs ago.

Personally, her body = her decision on this issue.

Just my opinion.....

I appreciate the opinions which are not on my side.... I do not "own" my child. I am her Mother, I am not her owner. She is not my property just as your body is only yours to choose if you want piercings, tattoos, or whatever.

If she wants a tattoo (and I have one) it is her decision and accordingly to law..........she has to be 18 for that choice.

I know my mom did it to me when i was 2 and my friends have done it when they were infants.

As for me i didnt want to put her through any undue pain.

I am not against pierced ears at all.

I am just going to wait for her to get older and ask for it. I will explain the process that it will hurt and it is a responsiblitly to keep it cleaned and to turn them daily. If she really wants them she will be fully aware.

Then we will take her. I feel at this age there is no reason for earings any way...they usually put on clip ons. Heck I dont wear earing myself...allergic now :-(

If you choose to do it...I reccomend having them do both at the same time. If they do one and she freaks she most likely wont let them do the other ear.

Good luck!

I got my daughters done when she was 3 months old. She cried for about 10 seconds. Never had any other issue with them. As far as the whole "why don't you let her decided if she even wants them" issue, I feel like I am her mother and I want her to have them. When she is old enough to decided, I guess she can make the decision to take them out.

Hi J.-

We waited until my daughter asked. She is 7 and we got them done this summer. However, I think it so adorable on little ones. Prob no big deal, but I just didnt do it because of the up keep of cleaning and twisting them everyday. We took our d to Claires. She did a wonderful job. (if you go to any store I would call ahead make sure there are two available to do it) The only problem I would see with her age is will she sit still during the process? The lady we had was so precise in getting them even that she kept wiping of the dots and stepping back to make sure. So it took longer than I thought it would. Also will she let you clean them and twist them everyday for 6-8 weeks? If so, I say go for it and the pain wont be so bad. She will prob cry for a few seconds, but as soon as you show her the new earrings she will be excited!

I wanted to have my ears pierced when I was young but my mother wouldn't think of it. When wearing earrings I had to screw one so tight to keep it on that I might as well have had it pierced. I finally got them done when I was 21.

My daughter got her ears done at 4 months at a store in the mall in Canada at the time. She cried about 30 seconds and that was it. It was easier for me to get them done then when I could care for them. I had a friend who had her daughter's ears done when she was 5 and the girl was so excited and proud of her ears. The only problem was that she was always touching them and they got infected.

There is no right or wrong to this decision it is a matter of choice.

Oh by the way, my daughter added additional ear piercings to her ears after she became 18. She also has 4 tattoos that she decided on all of which are concealed under clothes and she is 31. My son got an ear pierced at age 25 and a tattoo on his arm of his son's name about 12 inches long and he is 35. Sorry for the length. The other S.
