Dry Itchy Skin!

My skin has been dry and very itchy the last few days. What do you do to treat your dry skin? Are there any great products I should try? Special soap or lotion to buy? Thank you for your advice!

What can I do next?

I have psoriasis, so dry skin is always a problem for me--especially in the winter. There are 2 lotions that I have found (finally!) that help me a lot. One is from Bath & Body Works called "Look Ma, New Hands". It is thick and smells good and best of all it isn't greasy! The other is the hand therapy lotion from Eucerin.

Good luck to you! I know how annoying dry skin can be. :)

The suggestions you have received are all great.

One more thing to add to your regimen in the kitchen: while I'm cooking, I rub a few drops of EVOO into my clean hands/fingers/cuticles. It adds a nice conditioning, protective barrier while I'm in the kitchen. And I don't mind that food substance touching all the food. I don't like the idea of wearing lotion while preparing food.

I posted something like this a week or so ago.

My hands are TRASHED from all the washing - have a baby, two other kids, and all the housework and cooking to do.

Although I haven't found a cure, I know eating foods with lots of fatty acids are good, like olive oils, butters, etc and drink lots of water (not caffeinated drinks). I also take a fish oil supplement. It helps moisturize from the inside out.

I have tried hand soaps with lotion and dish soap with moisturizers too. They do help.

When I'm really desperate, I use gloves at night, lube up with Aquaphor and sleep with them on. For my body, I've found Aveeno products help - they have an oatmeal bath powder packet and an in-shower oil that you put on after you've washed, apply it, rinse it and pat dry.

And I always have to have lip balm or Aquaphor on my lips. Esp first thing after brushing in the morning and right before bed.

I'll keep watching for more ideas.

Don't overwash.
Wear gloves to wash dishes.
Wear gloves when you go out into the cold.
Use Eucerin (I think it's called) lotion available and drugstores.
Don't overwash your hands for now.
Soaps are drying so try to find a soap w/lotion.

Aquaphor! The only thing I've found that really works, and boy does it work. They sell it at Walmart and its not too expensive. You'll love the results!

NO SOAP! soap dries out your skin. wash with a cream clenser instead (like dove) limit how hot you let showers become (tough during the winter iknow) moisturize before bed when your skin absorbs the most moisture.

Hi Lucky2BEE,

I just told Renee..."Aquaphor doesn't actually heal. Neither do Vaseline brand products. Renew lotion is the only thing over the counter lotion on the market that has been tested (double blind, clinical study) to do better than prescription lotions that a dermatologist would prescribe. It heals. Not only does it heal, but it also protects the skin from being irritated the next time it is abused with bleach and the like.

Let me know if you're interested and I can get you the information about it and where you can buy it."

Hope this helps!

M.
