Dr. Oz's Metabolic Typing Diet

Has anyone tried this? Has it worked? I came across an article in First magazine about Metabolic Typing. I did the quiz and it says I'm a Tigress. So, more protein and fat and low carbs is what I should be doing to lose weight and feel my best.

It seems like this would work for me. I've tried other programs like Weight Watchers, and even though my portion sizes were smaller and I stayed within my points, I couldn't lose more than a few pounds. I joined My Fitness Pal and logged for two weeks. I stayed under my calorie count and exercised every day of those two weeks. I didn't lose one. single. pound.

So, now I think I should try this way of eating. I'm at my heaviest, I'm prediabetic, I'm mildly depressed which I know is due to feeling bad about how I look. I'm just kind of crabby about it though. I don't know if I can get used to eating fish and meat all the time, and never eating bread, or cereal, or mashed potatoes. It sounds like my options are going to be very limited and I get bored when I have little variety and end up going back to my old ways.

I would love to hear from someone who has tried this, or otherwise completely changed their eating habits and was successful long term. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I don't know about that diet, but I'm following the Digest Diet (through Reader's Digest). I bought the book through Amazon for about $15 (it would be over $30 from Reader's Digest).

I started the diet Sunday, January 13, at 194 lbs (plus a few ounces.. I don't remember the decimals). For 4 days, I drank 2 of their "Fast release" shakes, and ate the Mexican Chicken soup (VERY yummy... you get 2 cups). They also plan in a snack of veggies and fat-free cheese.

Days 5-15 are 1 "fade away" shake (almost identical to the first shake, but not as much peanut butter), 2 meals, and 2 snacks.

Yes, I am still hungry at times, but I go for one of their suggested snacks... (whole grain crackers and peanut butter, raw veggies and non-fat yogurt, sunflower or pumpkin seeds, things like that).

When I weighed myself this morning, I was down to 186.4 lbs..... that's 8 lbs in 8 or 9 days. Most of that came off in the first 6 days, I think.

The Fast release shake is 3/4 C non-fat yogurt, 1/4 C coconut milk, 8 frozen strawberries, 1 TBSP flaxseed meal, 3 TBSP non-fat dry milk powder, 2 tsp honey, 1 TBSP peanut butter, 1/2 tsp vanilla, and either 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder or cinnamon (I chose the chocolate...yum!) You also put in 4 ice cubes. Whir that in a blender until nice and frothy. It is really very yummy!

Days 15-21 are apparently 3 meals a day...

It is trying to re-train me to build meals around the lean proteins and veggies, and stay away from the breads, white rice, pasta, and such. The meats I've been eating have been chicken and lean pork. They suggest using lots of flavor enhancers like oregano, pepper, lemon, garlic, and stuff like that..... if food tastes better, you are less likely to binge later.

I really don't feel deprived on this diet....

I haven't seen it but I have seen elements of what he likes. I did change to a breakfast he recommended about a yr ago. It's a sandwich with the triple health Engilish muffins with a slice of Swiss cheese and an egg fried in olive oil and a slice of tomatoe and a slice of avocado. I change it up regularly because I like variety. I don't change the bread though. Sometimes I use the reall thin provolone that sargento makes now. Sometimes I put tomatillo salsa on it. Sometimes a bit of jelly or mayo. That gives me enough variety to stick with it.

I HAVE to have protein in the morning. I can tell a huge difference. I have made little changes in my diet with less bread and potatoes. I do the frozen meals and add the one serving frozen veggies to it to make it more filling.

I do corn tortillas instead of flour. I do chocolate chips for desert instead of a real desert. I know some people are just rolling their eyes now, but those are big changes for me. And the best part is that I can make those changes for life.

I am a whole lot like you. Prediabetic, lose wt very slowly. I started walking about a yr ago. My goal was to walk an hour. Then to walk an hour, faster.
I did that for 7 mths before I got on a treadmill. I do it 3 times a week.

I have a plan to ask my doc about my thyroid. Even though my levels come bak ok, I have the symptoms of low thyroid. I am hoping we can speed up my wt loss. All these changes and if I am lucky I will lose 10 lbs this yr. but it's perminate changes. Maybe I will do another 10 next yr! Good luck!

Well I think Dr. Oz is just a mainstream hype dispenser. I would not trust what he says. I do think limiting carbs in your diet is a very good choice. They really mess with your system. I get that it's hard though, as I am a carb lover and I crave carbs constantly! I have yet to get to that level where I can even 1/2 them in my diet. I have been reading this guys site and really want to start with real food and slowly wean my carbs. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/#axzz2Icfp6C7d

I have no experience with this but i do with weight watchers (I'm currently on it and losing my baby weight). I can't eat whatever i want, stay within points and lose weight. I have to not only count points, but protein and calories as well. I try to get 80 grams of protein, and 1200 calories, i also limit carbs. I also have exercise daily. Good luck.

I do believe that not everyone has the same metabolism and that all eating styles are not for everyone. So, from that perspective metabolic typing would be a way to determine what eating style will work for you. Tigress sounds like the same premise of the Atkin's Diet - which can be truly effective for some metabolic types.

The problem with any diet is that unless you make it a lifestyle change, you will just gain the weight back. If you really are a tigress.... begin thinking about eating that way for the rest of your life... not just until the scale or label in your jeans hits a certain number.

I just went to the website and it says it costs $39.95 to take the test and get the results, so I am not going to do that.

Good Luck to you.

It sounds a lot like what I am doing. The program I just started following since the beginning of January is by Dr. Mercola (www.mercola.com). He has a FREE nutritional typing test that you can take. It will ask a series of questions about what you would eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks throughout the day. His program is based on metabolism and keeping insulin levels balanced, so cravings are reduced. There are three categories: vegetarian type, protein type and mixed type (combination of the two). I am the mixed type, so at all meals (including snacks) I eat a protein with a vegetable. Afterward, if I still feel like I want something then I can have a carb source. After you take the test and determine which type you are you can print your food choices list. Most carb choices are fruits, but there are some grains on it like rice, quinoa, oats and amaranth.
I didn't have any success with programs like weight watchers either. Dr. Mercola really stresses going gluten-free, soda and artificial sweetener free (stevia and raw honey are allowed though) and keeping your sugar intake to under 25 grams per day. The reasoning behind this is gluten is becoming widely recognized to cause all sorts of problems and many people have an intolerance that goes undetected, so Dr. Mercola encourages going gluten-free for 30-60 days and then re-introducing it back into your diet to see how your body reacts to it-headaches, digestive problems, bloating, even behavior issues/mood swings can be caused by gluten intolerance. As for going soda and sweetener free is because they have neuro-inhibitors in them that make us crave that extra sweet. The chemicals in them are pretty bad for our bodies too. The first couple days of sugar detox were the hardest for me and exercising in conjunction with the diet is key because it really helps to curb your cravings. You don't really have to count calories or keep track of anything (other than sugar and carbs), but I use My fitness pal too because I like to keep track of sodium, cholesterol and fat. I lost 10 pounds in one week! I have a long way to go to reach my goal, but I feel amazing. I don't surround myself with sugary or processed foods, but it isn't hard to stay away from once you get going. I also like the fact that I can eat real food-in fact organic, raw foods are highly encouraged on this program. There are protein shakes and other products that can be purchased, but I haven't delved into any of that yet and not sure that I will need to.
At any rate, I say give Dr. Oz' plan a try or try Dr. Mercola's. Just go to his website and do a search for the nutritional typing test . You do have to give your email information in order to get to the test, but it is free. I have found that for me to lose weight, cutting carbs (mostly in the form of grains) is my secret to losing weight and I am 42-an age when they say metabolism is notorious for really slowing down. Good luck!
