I am pregnant with my second child due the end of January...I have a 2 1/2 yr old but she will be 3 by the time the baby is born...so I was wondering if it is worth the extra money to buy a double stroller...we still use her stroller even though at times she doesn't want to sit in it but i was wondering if there are any other moms with children around the same age that found a double stoller useful or not...thanks in advanced for the advice!

My friend had a stroller that had a toddler area in the back where she could sit or stand and get up as he pleased. It was very neat and it wasn't much bigger than a regular stroller.

My daughter was 2 1/2 when my son was born and I got a sit n stand stroller so that my daughter could just jump on and off if she wanted to ride. We really only use it for places like the zoo and the mall, but it was a real life saver when we took them to Sea World this summer! The one I got actually has a second seat that you can snap in and she was able to nap in that when she got tired at the park. So, I guess I'm saying that if you don't go too many places where you might need them both to ride (i.e. where she would have to walk a long way), then it may not be worth it. I'm glad I got mine, but we don't use it a lot, so we may have been able to live without it if money was tight or I had to choose between that and something else.

All depends on places you frequent. You can get some excellent used ones (I think this is a great way to go so that you don't sink a ton of money into one that ends up having little features that bug you). You also should consider a wide one or a long one. I like the wide ones much more, but they can be a beast in certain places. (Very hard to maneuver through some museum entrances, for ex.) I like the long ones so you can go through crowds seemingly easier, but you'll always need the heavier child closer to you and that leaves the baby always farthest from you. Believe me, the weight of the heavier child can knock you out if she's the farther one! They each have their pros and cons. Oh, the opening/closing was waaaay easier on the double-wide. You also need to assess how much room you have for the stroller size in your trunk. It can be a major space hog. I bought two used double strollers from garage sales (1 of ea. style) and used them constantly with my first two children. But then I never once used a double stroller with my 3rd and 4th children because I never needed it (we've only used an umbrella stroller with the 4th one and everyone else walks). This all was because we didn't go outside to big events, places, etc. like we did with the first two babies. And we moved away from sunny Southern Cali!

Hi N.. Congratulations!

I have two boys who are 2 1/2 years apart.

My suggestion: look on Craigslist or a consignment shop and buy a used double jogging stroller. I used it until my older son was about 4-5. It helped to save my sanity because when I walked I could know where both of them were, keep them contained AND happy and I could get some much needed exercise. Wish I had mine to give to you, but I freecycled it before we moved from Maryland.

You could also get a baby sling for when your child is an infant/toddler, then take walks with the wagon.

Good Luck,
J.

I think it depends on your level of activity. I take my kids places all the time (zoo, park, etc.) where strollers are very helpful.

A friend of mine has the Sit and Stand and it looks awesome!

That said, I have three kids (4, 2 and 8 months) and rarely use my double. I used it when I would take the first two to the zoo while pregnant with #3 and I wanted everyone to stay in the whole time.

Now that #1 is old enough to walk, #2 is in the stroller while I "wear" baby #3 in a Mei Tai. I always wore # 2 as well, when #1 was in the stroller. I prefer to wear one and push the other (which changes, since my #2 is still dainty enough to be worn in the Mei Tai as well, so they switch). I mainly use the stroller to hold our big ole' 2-children-in-fluffy-cloth-diapers-and-holding-3-stainless-steel-water-bottles diaper bag!

If I were to buy a double now, I'd definitely get the Sit and Stand one. But I don't think it's completely necessary when you wear your babies as I do or if you're not active.

I would suggest looking to buy one second hand.

First question is, Do you really go enough places to need a stroller? Second question is, when she isnt in a stroller does she walk with you good?
I never bought one, I considered it but I just figured eventually my oldest wont want to ride anymore and then I would just be pushing around one child in a double.
So honestly in my opinion I say dont waste your money. Or if you dont care about the expense do it and you can always buy one for just the baby. Good Luck

I have the best double stroller! My son was 2 1/2 when my baby was born, and he still sits in the stroller and he's just over 3 years old. Go to: www.onestepahead.com

Sit 'n Stand Elite Double Stroller

Item #:
13129

$189.95

It has a removable back seat that turns into a traditional sit and stand when your older child outgrows a regular stroller seat. It's great since you can put your baby in the infant carrier when they are too young to sit the regular seat. I have the Chicco infant carrier (not listed as one of the compatible seats for this stroller) and it still works fine. I can actually fit the carrier in the front or back (not supposed to go in the back, but I like having the baby closer to where I can reach him) - but you have to recline the back seat all the way to get it to fit like this and the front seat needs to be completely upright. It does make the front seat a little tighter for your older child, but if you are just running in and out of stores, it's not too bad. I just love the flexibility and all of the possible ways you can use the stroller. They sell this stroller at Target for about $40 less (since you don't have to pay shipping and it's just a little less expensive there) and I believe you can also get it at Walmart.com and send it site to store. However, the one at One Step Ahead has rubber tires and makes it just a little more comfortable to use.

I researched lots of double strollers and have been very happy with this stroller (have had mine for 7 months now). It's also not bad to fold up (especially if you take off the sun visors). All doubles are heavy, but I can lift it pretty easily in and out of my Chrysler Pacifica. I use mine all of the time since I don't want to chase my 3 year old around a store while watching the baby in the stroller. My son loves sitting in the double (he calls it the "train stroller" since his brother gets to sit in there with him. I bought a "mommy hook" to hang on the handle so when I go to places like Target, I hook the hand basket on the hook and I can put a few items in that and don't have to mess with a shopping cart (unless I need large items).

Hope this helps! Congrats on #2!

I have a boy and girl that are 3 years almost to the day apart. I bought a standard Graco double stroller with one seat in front and other behind. It was so bulky and a hassel. The only place I didn't have an issue navigating at was the Zoo.At Stores/malls and museums and such it was hard to fit around corners etc.It also took up a rediculous amount of space in the car. Looking back, I wish I had purchased the stroller that has one seat with a platform behind it for a toddler to stand. They also allow for the carrier to sit on it too. There were times I needed a stroller to accomodate both because my 3 year old would still tap naps or get tired walking and it helped a lot. He is 5 now and my daughter is 2 and I would still like one because he could stand on the back of it while I pushed when he got tired of walking. Hope this helps! Congrats!

When my middle child was born, my oldest was 2 1/2. We got a double stroller. It is very helpful, esp. when going to the mall or something and your 2 1/2 year old gets too tired to walk or just to keep them both together. My middle and youngest are also 2 1/2 years apart, and I used the double stroller with them also.

NO! I had my youngest daughter when my oldest was 2 1/2 and we used our very expensive double stroller MAYBE 5 times. Even then it was harder to push and maneuver so I gave up. I was pushing it with only one child in it. If your oldest one wants to be in the stroller then it might be worth the money but not if they dont :)

i have only one little one who is 3 1/2 years old and we do still use a stroller/jogger for him. but i was thinking that maybe one of those strollers that have the stand up place in the back for the older ones and the front has the placed to lay/sit the smaller child. sorry, i don't know what this type of stroller is called. i've seen other mothers use them and have always thought it was a great idea.
good luck and congratulation on your second !

My two wonderful girls are 28 months apart... and yes we used the double stroller EVERYWHERE.. trust me they still do not want to walk alot. it is really difficult when you are somewhere and your 3 yr old decides to run off before you can turn around. We chose the stroller front to back double.

Good luck and God Bless your little ones.

We bought the type of stroller that has a normal stroller seat in front and a bench seat on the back so your toddler can either sit on the bench or stand just below it and ride. It worked well. You can also use the bench to hold a purse/diaper bag etc.

Hi N..
Im a mother of 2 beautiful girls ages 6 months and 19 months.. and I had the same dilemma. At first I was hesitant to buy a double stroller, and later, not right away purchased one.. and it has been the GREATEST investment!
It seems that since my older daughter would see the baby in it, made her want to be in the stroller as well..
Which in turn made it a lot less complicated and lot more helpful when we were on outings.

My daughters are 2 1/2 years apart. We purchased the Graco double stroller with one seat in front and one in back. It was the second best thing we ever purchased (the first was my Medela Pump In Style). We are a very active family. I found it easy to manuever in and out of stores. The side by side double stroller was too wide to move around and wouldn't fit through many places. We travel a lot and go to zoos, amusement parks, museums, etc. We started using the double stroller when my youngest was in an infant carseat and just snapped the carseat into the stroller. My older one would ride in the front. If she wanted to walk I used the empty seat for diaper bags, small coolers, shopping bags, or whatever else we carried. As my children got older it gave me an easy way to keep up with both of them when shopping. We used the double stroller until my oldest was around six. It is big and bulky. I didn't have a problem getting the stroller in and out of my vehicle because I drive an SUV. It would have been almost impossible to manage with a car. I selected the Graco model because I could easily open and close it with one hand while carrying a diaper bag and holding a baby. Even though I would never purchase a used carseat, I think it is a good idea to purchase a used stroller from Craigslist, ebay, or a consignment shop. A lot of people buy them, then discover they are not useful for them. You can generally find a really good deal on a slightly used stroller.

We have two boys - 3 1/2 and 11 months. We waited until our second was six months old, before breaking down and buying a double stroller. We like to take long walks as a family, and that was really hard to do without one. We bought the Bob Revolution double jogging stroller. We love it and wish we had bought it sooner!! Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Hi N.,

First congratulations.
Now I am going to tell you. I did buy a double stroller. I have not used it as much as I though but I have to be honest, I avoid as much as possible to go out by myself with both of my kids, which are about the same age difference yours will be, my son is now 3 and my girl is 11 months.

When I am out with my husband we use the old single stroller and a small umbrella stroller for my oldest when he feels like resting or some times he likes to push it around.

But if you go out a lot to the mall or places where you need to walk a lot and you plan to keep doing it with both kids (I just do it when my son is at Mother's day out) then you may find usefull the double stroller.

Hope this helps.

I have a Phil and Teds stroller that I can add the doubles kit to when I have my second. It is a great stroller and I can definitely see the future need for a double stroller. Their are cheaper versions out there, but I would suggest getting one, especially if your first isn't able to keep up yet.

Yes it is worth it. I have a 3 year old and a 2 1/2 year old and a friend of mine actually gave me a double stroller and I love it and it get's used all the time. Especially if you go places a lot. Still 3 is too little they do get tired.. like the mall or places that are too big for your 3 year old to walk around by their selves. Other wise you can get a umbriella stroller and they have an attachment that puts the two together. But yes it does get used.

I haven't used my double stroller as much as I thought I would because it has been so hot lately that we haven't been out and about as much as I thought we would in the park or walking in the neighborhood. However, I would recommend one. This week my oldest came down with the flu and we had to go back to the Dr. yesterday for a re-check. I don't know what I would do without the double stroller. He was so sick he could have never stood on the stand and ride. Also, there have been lots of times when I thought perhaps he would not want to ride but get out and walk but he has surprised me and enjoys riding in the stroller. He sits in the front and I think he really likes being right in front. We bought the Graco Duo Glider and the back seat folds down so his baby brother can lay down if he falls asleep while riding. It does take up a lot of room in the trunk but it does fit in our Honda Accord and I've been pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to steer. It has a better turn radius than my regular single stroller.

We have a 4 year old son and an 11 mth old daughter. We do lots of things that require a stroller and so we definitely needed a double stroller. The catch for us was that my son doesn't really like to stay seated but gets tired (or really slow) when we are walking a lot. So, we got the Baby Trend Sit and Stand stroller. Our son stands or sits on the back and the baby sits in the front. The babys infant carrier snapped into the front when she was smaller and now she can sit up in the front without the carrier. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=309636... We got ours at Target and it was a little cheaper. I think $110. We let my son walk as much as he wants when we're out, but its nice to have the option to let him have a seat when he's tired, or let him stand forward and see whats going on when its too crowded for him to be solo. It has worked great at the zoo, the mall, the museum, etc. we love it! good luck!
