Do You Always Need Antibiotics for C-diff?

My son had strep throat three times from the end of February until the end of March. Last week he had a temp of 99.5, stomach ache, and a headache that lasted a short time. He had a negative throat culture. He slept for two hours and was perfectly fine. Yesterday, my son had three loose stools, and this morning he has had two. He has no fever, no pain (just a little cramping right before passing a stool) and has a good appetite, though he is not thrilled with a bland diet today. His last loose stool was three hours ago. He is active, although maybe just a little low. Of course it is Sunday. I am waiting for a call back from Urgent Care as to how to proceed. I don't think much can be determined without a stool sample. I will definitely be taking him to the pediatrician tomorrow. One of his stools this morning had a slightly fishy odor. I am really concerned about c-diff. My son ate a yogurt every day he was on antibiotics and he is still taking Pearls childrens probiotics every day. I hate the thought of putting him on another antibiotic for c-diff, if that's what this is. Have any of your children experienced mild c-diff. that went away without antibiotics?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

C-diff and other tests all came back negative, but my son's bathroom routine is taking a long time to return to normal. My husband picked up the same bug and lost 7 pounds in one week, but he is completely fine now. Thanks for all your responses!

Yes as C-diff is highly contagious.

Hi Rita-

C diff Is really nothing to fool with in the young (or old...or fragile).

The docs office will want to culture his stool...but you are correct...the stool with c diff has a very distinctive smell...usually.

Flagelle (sp?) is one drug that that is given for c diff...I do not think it is an antibiotic...In fact, the antibiotics used to combat the strep may have thrown off the intestinal flora RESULTING in c diff.

I would personally get my little guy to a doc ASAP. Dehydration can be quickly serious.

Best luck!

If there is a chance it is C diff you need to start treating him ASAP before permanent damage is done to his intestines. Does he have a fever?

C-diff. is bad. Very very bad. Go to the doctor and give him the antibiotics ASAP. (Probably Flagyl or Metrodinazole.)

No, antibiotics aren't fun, aren't great for little kids, and aren't great for the world in general, but be glad they're there when you need them. (And, yes - he needs them now.)

Here's a suggestion about the repeated strep infections.....

One year, I had several bouts of strep throat.....

I had always heard to buy a new toothbrush, since the toothbrush can harbor the strep germs..... but never knew when to buy it....

I asked my doctor, and he said that all I needed to do was to disinfect the toothbrush with Listerine! I used the Original Listerine.... it kills BUNCHES of bacteria.

If your son plays an instrument (horn, etc.), check to see if you need to do something about disinfecting the mouthpiece.

Think about anything in his environment that could be harboring the strep bacteria.....
