Several months ago my husband and I booked a cruise not realizing I would be 8 weeks pregnant while on board! I have terrible naseau symptoms as it is - does anyone have any recommendations on easing nausea while on board? Any advice would be much appreciated!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who gave me such helpful advice! I had my first prenatal appointment late last week, and the doctor recommended that I not go on the cruise at all during my first trimester. My husband and I were pretty shocked about that advisement. I think the doctor is either a little nuts or just being overprotective as I am considered high risk due to a previous late 1st term miscarriage. Anyway, I can still use everyone's tips and appreciate all of the responses I got to my request! - M.

Hi M., my husband and I left for a cruise when I was exactly eight weeks pregnant. I to already had a lot of nausea and was really nervous about the trip. The day we left I had a doctors appointment and ask him to give me something for nausea(just to make it through the trip). Although I still had bouts of nausea the meds atleast allowed me to enjoy most of my trip. I would recommend bringing something for nausea before boarding the vessal.

Ok I know what you are about to go through! Everytime me and my husband have planned a trip(work usely sponsors reward trips) I have become pregnant two of those times was on a cruise! So here is the advice Don't go up to the upper decks while leaving or arriving at a port. The bottom off the cruiser doesn't rock as much. Also eat small meals often there is always food being served in some part of the ship. When you are out in the ocean the movement isn't much more then driving in a car so it really isn't all that bad. On my last cruise we did run into a storm and the boat was pretty rocky I did find that the motion sickness bands (they look like bracelets) worked when things were a little unsetteled and I asked my obgyn about those before I left and he said they were safe because they just add pressure to pressure points.
Hope you have fun!

M.,

I have worked as a travel agent for over 8 years and we get this question ALL the time!!!

What works best is ginger root. You can find it at most health stores. I would check with the ob/gyn to make sure it's okay for you to take it while pregnant.

Outside of the cruise, you can put saltine crackers and something like a bottle of sprite on your bedside table. In the morning when you wake up, before you even get one foot out of bed, eat a few of the crackers and drink some of the sprite. This helps with morning sickness. Also, tic tacs are good during the day to help with the feeling of nausea.

Have fun on the cruise, and congratulations on your pregnancy!!!

M.- This is something I've only heard about, I never tried it myself, but my sister-in-law swears by candied ginger pieces. You can get them at some coffee shops, gift shops, health food stores, places like that. She says one in the morning and one any time you can feel the nausea rising up helps a lot! Of course you'd want to check with your MD before trying it, but it's an idea.

Good luck!

Not just on a cruise, but the best thing for nausea is making sure you're hydrated, eating lots of small meals & snacks, and taking the ever-present Saltines & 7up. Also, if you're still taking the prenatal vitamins through the pregnancy, the iron always compounded the nausea for me, so I'd take them right before going to sleep. Also, make sure you eat a cracker or two right when you wake up. Good luck and have fun!

I took a cruise at 11 weeks. I got a prescription from my ob for the patch and it worked just fine. The only problem I had was that it made my eyesight a little blurry after a few days! Good luck, have fun!!

On a cruise I have no idea. But at home you need to eat alot of small meals and before you get up in the morning, eat some crackers. Have them by your bed so you can munch on them before you even sit up in the bed. That helped me somedays. But you are just pregnant and it will get better and then sickness will end. Then you will beable to enjoy your pregnancy. Congratulations and good luck.

Anything with salt! I tried everything from eating toast or crackers, but I found that anyting with salt or just vegetables cured my nausea. First time around was more difficult, but the second I just ate alot of salt (not directly) at night and morning. Just find someting to eat that could use alittle salt and away you go.

My husband and I just went in August and it was FANTASTIC! you are going to have a blast. There is some kind of sticker that goes high on your neck kind of behind and below your ear that alot of people wore on our trip. They all swore by it, your doc will know what it is called.

My husband and I went on a cruise a little over a year ago and we loved it. I thought I would get sick too, but really it was a very stable ride. We just happened to be trying to outrun a hurricaine, so the seas were more rough than they would normally be. If you want, you might ask your Dr about the patch you wear right behind your ear. I don't know how it interacts with pregnancy, but it would be worth asking about. They also sell little bracelets on the ship that I heard worked well. If this is your first cruise, you'll love it. We will be taking as many as possible.

you can get a prescription motion sickness patch from you ob. i did when i cruised about 12 wks along. the beginning was rough seas, but after a day i was fine. be carefull of smaller boats, like tenders or river tours, though. they are much more harsh. and have fun!

I never had to deal with the naseau while I was pregnant, but I did go on a cruise while I was 6 months pregnant and I did fine. It didn't make it any worse. Maybe get some of those preggie pops from motherhood, they would probably help. I don't know what deck your room is, but the lower you are the more you feel the movements of the ship. So spend most of your time on the higher decks.
