Crown and Filling Yesterday - Sore Today?

Hey ladies!

so, on the one hand i was tickled that the crown and filling went better than i thought yesterday morning. last time i had dental work done (extraction - first work in about 15+ years) i nearly had a panic attack, it took them forever to start because my bp wouldn't stay down...so anyway i was pretty happy this time :) it went very well and they were awesome and i was totally at ease...

however, it DID take over 2 1/2 hours in the chair. obviously they had to make the crown, but also i was bleeding pretty good so they had to wait for that to stop.

the only problem i'm having (besides i don't think they ground the crown down enough) is that my jaw hurts! yesterday it just felt sore/stiff, i imagined just from being in that position for so long. but today it honestly feels like i am getting a sore throat on that side. normal? they told me i shouldn't have any pain after the numbness wore off. which i haven't, in my teeth. just my jaw/throat. thanks mamas!

What can I do next?

Totally normal. Your mouth was in an open position for 2-1/2 hours...yep, it will be sore. My guess is the dryness caused the soreness in your throat. Dentists put all kinds of things in your mouth while they do their work. Some of the vibrations from the drill, stuff that comes out of your teeth while drilling...all can cause mouth/sore throat pain. Do you sensitive teeth? When I have fillings, root canals or crowns done, I can hurt for up to a week or more. Heck, I had a root canal done in February of 2012 on a top front tooth...it is still very sensitive.

There are a couple of products over the counter that work for great for oral pain and sensitivity. Rincinol is an oral rinse that helps soothe pain. It's great for canker sores. Orabase by Colgate is also very good for pain relief. You can also do an old-fashion water/table salt rinse for relief. I also brush my teeth with Sensodyne toothpaste--great for sensitive teeth.

I hope you feel better:)

Troy had one done a few months ago. He proudly declared this isn't so bad....until the next day.

i'm surprised that they would tell you there would be no pain. you just had your jaw cranked open for a crazy amount of time, and your gumline severely abused.
i'm so glad it went well! take some tylenol. all will be well in a few days.

just had a sedative packing + large filling a couple of weeks ago. I was told to expect soreness for up to one month, & to take the Naproxen I had at home for one week. If the soreness increased beyond sensitivity, then I needed to call. If the soreness became Pain, then I needed to immediately call...regardless of the day.

I had difficulty holding my jaw open for any length of time. The dentist was very accommodating & gave me frequent breaks. Once the old filling was removed & the tooth was prepped, he used a bite block to ease/relax my jaw. Even with all of this, my jaw was sore for almost 2 weeks- lots of TMJ pain/soreness.....& that's normal for me. :)

Definitely normal. I'm actually surprised you're tooth and the area around it isn't sore. I had a crown a few weeks ago, and was definitely sore the next day.

I usually take some tylenol or ibuprofen. That usually does the trick.

It's annoying, but it's also totally normal.

Normal, I was sore for close to a week after my last dental appt. Anytime I get a cavity filled I'm especially sore.

Yup, normal. But you are also correct that the crown may need a little more "buffing" to make your bite comfortable. Don't let it go for more than a week!
