I am currently looking for a crib mattress for my newborn. What do you suggest? Foam or coil? Brand? Any input would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I bought a Colgate foam mattress from babyage, and it was the best thing I did. Its rated very highly and it only weighs 7lbs so its very easy to change the sheets during the night when accidents happen.

Colgate mattresses are the best - #1 in Baby Bargains book. Great price. Go to Lazar's Juvenile Furniture Store in Lincolnwood.

I hope you don't mind, but I don't really have crib advice. I noticed that you are from Evanston (so am I) and have a newborn. I had my first baby (David) on August 9th and am looking to network with other new moms in the Evanston area. If you are interested in talking about starting a group e-mail me at ____@____.com. I live in Southeast Evanston.

Did you have a boy or girl? How old exactly? Are you originally from Evanston or elsewhere?

I believe that the foam mattresses are much better for the following reasons:

1. They are generally firmer than the coil mattresses (which is recommended by most pediatricians)

2. They are generally much lighter in weight than coil mattresses. This makes them much easier to lift in and out of the crib for sheet/mattress cover changes. In the early months, you tend to change sheets a bit more and having a lighter mattress to deal with is a very nice benefit.

and

3. They are less money than the coil mattresses.

The Colgate (www.colgatekids.com)Classica I is the top rated foam mattress by Consumer Reports and that is the one I recommend. I bought it for my son who is almost 22 months and I have just purchased another one for my baby that is due at the end of December.

Hi N.! I used a Colgate foam crib mattress for my daughter and now son. I love it and it was not overly expensive. It is no frills but that is all that you need.

Hope this helps.
