Crayons in the Washer

Can crayon stains be removed from clothes after they are washed and dried? On laundry day, I discovered while folding my clothes that my beloved seven year old son had an orange crayon in his pocket (the crayon completed a full laundry cycle). It is all over his school uniforms (red, blue, yellow shirts, and tan bottoms)not to mention my clothes too. I could just scream!!! I suppose this is my fault becasue I will admit I have got out of the habit of checking pockets (seeing that I passed on the responbility to my child since he is old enough to empty his own pockets). I always empty my pockets and never thought to check over him doing his own (I know now). Needless to say we have orange all over everthing. I am open to all suggestions.

What can I do next?

My mother-in-law washed my kids clothes with my clothes and they went through the dryer on medium. I washed them in hot and let them soak and the crayon came out. I guess it remelted the crayon. I don't know if I just got lucky or what, but I would say anything is worth a try. Good luck.

try soaking the whole load with TIDE detergent overnight..I had this happen with a red crayone one time when my oldest was younger, and it took out all the crayon color even in jeans...TIDE seemed to help lift out the stain..even AFTER it had went thru a dryer!
and I STILL DO NOT check my families pockets....lol If it gets washed..oh well...My job is enough to wash and do all chores..witout having to do everything for them! of course..I have a 16 yr old and a 14 yr old>>and one who's 20 and has moved out...so teach them EARLY to take responsibility for their things..GOOD LUCK..Hope my advice helps!!

I don't think that's happened to me yet :o) But have you tried putting stain remover or the actual detergent on the stains, letting it sit, then maybe put it on auto-soak, then it will wash? See if that will work if you haven't tried it yet already.

If it's the wax that's all over, the best remedy for removing wax from clothing, carpets, etc., is to take your iron and put on cotton setting, and then take a piece of newspaper and place it over the wax on the clothes and then iron the newspaper, you should see the wax absorbed by the paper, then get a clean spot on the newspaper and repeat until it is all removed.

Hey there! I checked in my book, How to Clean Practically Anything, and they referred to Crayola's site. I don't know exactly what kind of crayon it was so here's the link with the different types. http://www.crayola.com/canwehelp/staintips/stain.cfm
First choose your crayon type then choose what was stained. Good luck!

I like a lot of the suggestions the others have given!! I'll have to remeber those if it happens to me!!! But I like a product called Desolve It. It is in the cleaning isle. It is great on marker, ink and greesy stuff. But use it sparlingly and test it first for color fastness cause it can fade color in the spot you sprayed it!! And also, if the crayon is in your dryer, try the MR. Clean Magic eraser!! I love that thing!!

Hi Jaqueline. I have a suggestion you can try, but please pick your least favorite item and and/or an inconspicuous spot. In the past we've had a lot of success with WD-40 in getting out crayon from other items. I will admit I've never tried it on clothes. It is oil based, so it will break up the waxy crayon, but it will also leave an oily residue. You will need to rewash the stuff after you use it in hot water and detergent. It will take detergent to break up the oil.

We have used WD-40 to remove crayon, grafiti, and sometimes even permanent marker from chalkboards and other surfaces with great success. You always have to follow it with some form of detergent. On the chalkboards we used Joy dish detergent after it.

Also, it might be worth checking out www.ifi.org. That is the International Fabricare Institute, a professional drycleaners organization.

Good luck.

There is a product at most hardware stores called "Oops".
It works wonders. Recently, my 14 year old left chapstick in his pockets and I did not realize it until after I removed the clothes from the dryer. I applied the opps directly to the stain and rewashed the clothes.

Good Luck,

Hi,
Petsmart and Walmart have "Simple Solution"- find it in the pet section. It will say something like, gets pet stains out fast-it gets blood out of white shirts (dried on). I hope this works!

There is a product I've found called "Goo Gone" and it removes EVERYTHING! I've never used it on clothing but it says that you can. Check it out and if it doesn't work on that, you will have it for everything else!!

you can iron out the wax with a towel to absorb the wax but you still have to deal with the dye...good luck. maybe someone knows how to remove the dye.

I washed and dried a load of clothes with a red crayon a couple of months ago. I don't know the exact measurements of each product because I just poured but,try using hot water, your normal detergent, 20 mule Borax and OxiClean. Put the clothes and cleaners in the washer and soak in the hot water for 20 minutes or so before actually starting the washer. I went through the process twice and almost all of the crayon came out. Good Luck!
