Cracked Painful Skin Issues

My two year old has a patch of dry, cracked and painful skin right behind only one of her ears. There are little red bumps and its even crusty. This has been going on for almost two months.

I dry carefully behind her ears after baths- so I know that its not from that. I have been moisturizing the area with vaseline- but by the time she wakes up in the morning, it is dry, cracked and crusty again. She complains that it is painful too! She used to wear earings- and I took them out- I thought they may be causing irritation- but its been way too long since she had them in.

Any idea what's going on? How can I treat this- because obviously petroleum jelly isn't working. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Also, be careful to keep her hair away from it. I've seen where some kids who constantly pull their hair behind their ears can get cut by the hair...sometimes one side more than the other.

Sounds like a touch of eczema?? We have always had success with Eucerin cream (the thick stuff) for that.

If it persists I would definitely seek out your pedi's advice!

I agree it sounds like eczema that may have become infected from scratching. Definitely use the neosporin, if it doesn't clear up you may need to get a prescription cream. You can also use over the counter cortisone, but only use it twice a day. (Using it too much can make it worse.) I would alternate the neosporine and cortisone.

My son and I both have eczema and it pops up in the weirdest places!

Hello,

I reviewed your post and it sounds very similar to when my daughter was diagnosed with eczema. She was on steroid creams for almost 11 years. Just recently, in Nov., I switched stores and started buying a lotion called Renew and it has worked miracles on her. She woke up the second day and said, "Mom, my arms are so soft!" It really made me feel good! She can apply it herself, no more steroid creams, and has smooth skin for the first time in years. What I love is that it is NOT greasy and works better than I ever imagined! If you're interested, I'd be happy to share the info with you. Best of luck!

Sounds like a rash or an infection to me. I would take her to the doc. to get checked out.

I use Lantaseptic...it is extremely thick, but works wonders on those areas. In most cases overnight!!!!! I would take her to see the doc if it continues. I'm pretty sure you can purchase Lantaseptic at any pharmacy. I use it on the kids bottoms mostly....I've used it under my breasts!!! We use it in the hospitals and nursing homes to help reduce skin breakdown!!!!! IT IS GREAT!!!!!

hope this helps...

Sounds like it might be impetigo. Try some neosporin for a few days. If it's not improving, go to your doctor to get a perscription antibiotic.

My 5 year old has this. 1% Hydrocortisone, over the counter at any store, works great.

I would try neosporin all day. Start in the morning and by the mext morning it could be healed. You might keep an eye on her. She could be pulling on it or rubbing it on the pillow in the night.

Persistent redness and pain, sounds like a slight skin infection. I second the neosporin. Try it for 3-5 days: Dab on a little hydrogen peroxide (shouldn't hurt) and then some neosporin in the morning and again before bed.
