Hi!
I'm slowly weaning my 10 and half months old boy, but heard you're not supposed to give him cow's milk until his first b-day. Can I start giving him soy milk or something. He's a very healthy boy and I think he might be even ready for the whole milk, but I would still like to know if there is something else I can give him instead (besides formula). Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi J.,
The AAP recommends breastmilk or formula until the first birthday. The majority of nutrition for the first year comes from breastmilk or formula, not the solids they are eating. I know many of our moms gave us whole milk before the first b-day without problems, but we have come a long way in education since then. Is there any way you can continue to breastfeed until his first b-day? Is he eating alot of solids? I would still wait until his first b-day to introduce him to any other type of milk.
Sincerely,
L.

I would wait until his 1st b-day. Allergies and allergic reactions are on the rise because we introduce certain foods too early. What is 2 more months if you have done it for 10? Nothing can replace breast milk or formula, so just wait. Why not express your milk and put it in a sippy cup instead of breastfeeding or putting it in the bottle?

Hi J.,

I agree with the first two mom's. If you can wait longer, it may be better. Have you asked your pediatrician? Our pediatrician told to go to whole milk at age 1 and then 2% milk at age two because of the fat levels. Also, were told to wait on milk due to the potential for allergic reactions.

We were able to begin giving our girls up to 4 ounces of water every so often in addition to their formula. Also, I don't recommend soy formula or soy milk unless your pediatrician tells you to use it. There are more studies coming out about the negatives of soy on very young children. You may want to do some research on it.

Good luck.

I fully recommend giving raw milk when you do begin giving cow's milk. Do your own research, but if you don't feel like it here is but ONE thing you can find: http://www.raw-milk-facts.com/raw_milk_health_benefits.html

God didn't make anything bad for us. People have meddled with and twisted our natural foods in some attempt to make them 'better'. It didn't work. It was perfect when God made it!
