Constipation - Fishkill, NY

My daughter gets very constipated.
I have had this problem since I was a child too, so I guess it runs in the family!
Anyway, it was always well controlled with adding prunes to her diet.
Now that the weather has gotten warmer, and she has started to refuse some foods, it is harder to get her to eat the prunes.
She also doesn't want to drink as much as when she was younger, and I know fluids are a big must for her hydration as well as her bowels.
She is not sick, just starting to feed herself and being picky about things.
She does still take the stage II formula (2 bottles a day) and she will take milk and drinkable yogurt. She doesn't want juice much anymore and water is only when she is in the mood. I tried giving her some home brewed decaf iced tea very diluted, but she wasn't a fan of that either.
So what can I do to releive her constipation.
I know she is cutting all 4 of her canine (Fang, "stomach teeth" as my Mom calls them)
Mom says that kids can have changes in appetite, and bowels when they cut these teeth.
She told me to be happy she isn't having diarrhea as many get that with the teething too, but I really hate to see my daughter strain the way that she has been lately.

Thanks for your help ladies!

Take a good look at what you're feeding her! If you want her fluid intake to increase, increase things that make her thirsty, Crackers, etc...

Our doctor gave us a script for POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL. It is a fiber powder that I put in her milk, sauces, anything that she eats everyday. She is 11 so the dose is 1 tblsp. daily.

Also go online and find high fiber foods to incorporate into her diet, For example apples (the peelings have the fiber). Get a small food processor, grind up apples, add to oatmeal, pancakes, etc. Also, there is a Pedisure that is high in fiber. My last, but not least suggestion buy DECEPTIVELY DELICIOUS by Jessica Seinfeld (barnes&noble) I swear this book is heaven sent. I have changed my enitire familys way of eating. You have to out-smart your child and include the best foods for the digestive system! Try warm diluted prune juice with alittle honey, you enjoy a (cup of something) when you give it to her, make her think you are having the same thing, or you actually could! ALSO INCREASE THE WATER INTAKE by any means necessary. (try alittle lemon in it) THAT HELPS MORE THAN YOU KNOW!!! If you want things to change, then you have to change what you're doing... Very Best to you! CC

try ice pops... has she ever had them? Make them at home with fruit juice.. maybe some prune juice. How about a piece of watermelon? or cutting up fruit, apples, oranges, blueberries.. Make sure she gets some fruit. How about jello with fruit in it. Or pieces of cucumber or red peppers.. (my kids love sweet red peppers.) all of this will help. They usually love watermelon or how about corn on the cobb? These are stuff that kids usually like and it will help. cut up tomatoes and put some dip out too.. kids love to dip... good luck..

Hi P.,

My daughter was very constipated when she was younger as well, it was a huge struggle for us. We had to put capsules(laxatives) in her rear end to help her poop and we were also suggested by our pediatrician to give her something called Malt Supex (Suplex). You can get this at health stores, and you can mix it into her milk, it came in a powder form and I also believe in a liquid form I don't remember. It seemed to help our daughter. You can ask your doctor about this or at the health store/pharmacy. My daughter is 10 now and seem to be fine although she still struggles with constipation at times. She also had colic when she was a baby, not sure your child had this or if it has anything to do with this. Best of luck to you!

Hi P., My son (who is 3)used to go days w/o going (up to 8 days). The pediatrician says it's normal but I thought it wasn't healthy. We started him on V-8 Fusion, it's a full serving of both fruits & veggies. It's a little on the thick side so we dilute it with water. He drinks it all the time and goes at least every other day, if not every day.

Hope this helps!

How about making smoothies using pears or baby prunes---might not sound like the best flavors for you or me but can work for tots. Just dabble with your own recipe. You can use milk, soy milk, plain yogurt, or vanilla flavored yogurt. Add some crushed ice for extra water--you can make extra and keep it in the frig.

I just found these bran flakes at the grocery store--you can basically sprinkle them in to anything to help add fiber to the diet or mix them in with bread crumbs or tomato sauce.

Have you heard of Fruitables juice boxes? They contain juice made of fruit and veggies. They might do the trick!!!

Hi patty. My dauhter had a problem with constirpation as well. Feed her fruts like pears, prunes, peaches the doc said feed her anything that starts with a p. Also gerber makes a pear juice that she will love and it works. You can also try a tsp of karo sryup in her bottle. I did and it works. Last but not least flaxseed or flaxseed oil.i a not sure how old your daughter is but her doc is very natural and he said to put a tsp of flaxseed in her food in the morning up to 3 a day until she goes. Flaxseed oil would be in her juice or water. It is tasteless and ordorless. My daughter also liked her beverages very cold. Try these ideas they work. Good luck!

My dd is 17 months old and she battled with constipation from 5 months till 1 year. All of a sudden she could just eat anything and she'd occasionally get constipated but I'd use prune/apple juice first thing in the morning before she drank her formula. Also my ped said to try feeding 4x a day and only offering 4 oz. of liquid at each meal. Followed by as much water as they want (but only after the meal). She incouraged me to get her to eat more of her vegetables (preferably the green ones that are high in fiber) before she drinks anything (which would fill her up). If over a year no more than 16oz. in a day of milk or formula (some say the dairy can bind them too), and I give her no more than 4-6oz of diluted (half and half) juice inbetween meals. I feel like I am a healthy food nazi or constantly offerring her drinks after a snack or after a meal as often as possible. Every child is different, and I am not sure how old yours is, but someday she'll even out. You're doing a great job!

I didn't read all of the posts so I am not sure if someone already mentioned this, but my neice has bad constipation problems and she is 2 years old. Dairy is what does it to her so my brother and sister-in-law has to give her soy in place.

Hope this helps.
