Cold Mattress

I keep my house rather warm, about 72f all day. I make for sure that my baby girl's room is warm all the time for her, but every time i put her down in her crib while she is asleep, it wakes her up because the sheets and mattress are cold. I don't really know what to do. She falls asleep so well out in the living room on the couch with me and i pick her up to put her in her bed and she instantly wakes up crying because the sheets are cold. I have even tried warming up a blanket in the dryer prior to putting her down, but that is soooooo much trouble to do EVERY time i lay her down. Anybody have ANY SUGGESTIONS?

What can I do next?

I heating pad really might help. I found with mine, the problem wasn't actually the mattress, it was whether or not they were in a deep sleep. If you try to move them when they are not in a deep sleep, there's a good chance they will wake. Look for signs she's in a deep sleep: limbs are limp (I usually picked up an arm to see if it would flop down), breathing has become very quiet and slow, no eye movement (not in REM sleep). I know there are other signs, those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head. Actually, the limp limbs was the one I always used.

Just a thought. Hope it helps.

Another vote for flannel sheets, not only they are so soft but they are warmer then cotton ones. Also put a mattress pad between the mattress and the sheets.

It might depend on how old she is, but for my kids I usually would have a spit cloth or something under their heads on my shoulder, or if I'm lying down with them then have one under the baby's head and my upper body. I keep that with the baby under his head when I put him down. I think that since I'm also nursing (and nursed my others) that the familiar smell helped them stay asleep better and it was body-warmed already.

You can use flannel sheets but you can also put a heating pad down to warm things up a bit before putting your baby in the crib. Make a spot that's nice and toasty, remove the heating pad and lay her down. Her own body heat will warm things up after that.

Best wishes.

Flannel sheets or t-shirt sheets don't seem to get as cold as cotton sheets. Maybe try that.

have you considered that it may NOT be the cool of the sheets, but rather the loss of the warmth of your body? You do not mention how old your daughter is. Sheets in a 72 degree room may be cool, but they are NOT cold. This sounds more like not wanting to be separated from you. Have you tried letting her fall asleep on the couch rather than in your arms?

You could try putting a blankie behind you and lean against it on the couch or chair while you are holding her, or even sit on it while you are holding her to let your body heat warm it up. Then you can just pick it up and lay it in the crib when you put her down.

I used a small foot square electric heating pad from CVS (about $25) and I would heat up the center spot, then pull it out of the way before laying my child down. That way she gets to lay down on a nice warm comfy spot and does not wake up.

are you sure that is what it is? our kids would wake up just b/c the scenery/noise changed. then the feeling of falling when you lay them down. If you are sure it is the warmth issue then I would try putting a warm blanket or cushy comforter under the fitted sheet. That way she is not up against the mattress with only a fitted sheet between her and the mattress. if that doesn't work, you could put a portable heater on pointing at her mattress and then when you put her down, turn it off. My kids always slept well in our living room too, not sure how they could with all the noise of tv, etc but I started putting them down earlier and in their room instead of letting them fall asleep in the living room. there are electric mattress pads for adult beds, you can see if they make them for cribs but I would make sure you ask the doc before you do that just in case. I know someone who turns it on 15 mins before bed and then turns it off when she gets in bed. Good luck and congrats!

It is a pain to warm up the sheets everytime. How about warming up a fluffy towel really warm and then laying it over her sheets for a few minutes right before you put her down to sleep? Then its not a hassle.

Have you thought about picking up a twin size electric blanket and putting it in the crib before you start getting her to sleep? When you take her in to lay her down take the blanket out. The mattress and sheet should be snuggly warm when you lay her down. I do that for my own bed in the winter time...sometimes in the summer when the AC has been on.
Good Luck

I don't care for my cold sheets either and everyone laughs at me for what I do. When I get in bed I put my hair dryer on under the end of my blanket to warm my feet and the sheets. When I'm warm enough I turn the dryer off and put it in the floor. If the noise of a hair dryer wouldn't bother your baby you could warm her bed that way.

Have you thought of using a blanket when getting her to sleep and putting that in bed with your daughter... between her and the sheets?

Echoing the suggestions to put a heating pad in (just make sure you turn it off before leaving the room, and preferably before putting her down on it). You also may want to try putting her down mostly asleep but not completely asleep, and then pat her to sleep the rest of the way. That way, you don't risk waking her up by transfering her after she's asleep.

My friend has a heating pad in her son's crib (under the sheets). She keeps in on low when he sleeps. He is almost 2 and he sleeps GREAT. I have been thinking of trying this with my daughter. She loves body heat and snuggling with me. I am hoping it will give her that warm snuggly feeling in her crib. You can also switch to a flannel sheet which feels much warmer.
