Co-sleeping - Waterford,MI

I know that there is a major split on this issue and I understand the arguments for and against. We are co-sleepers at my house -however, I always thought that by the age of 3 my son would find his way into his own bed. He potty-trained well, started pre-school for 3 year olds two weeks ago and is making those transitions wonderfully! However, getting him out of our bed is a serious issue. We have a daughter too, who is 1 and also sleeps with us. I am still nursing but hope to quit soon with her. The nursing is why these children started sleeping with us to begin with. Both my husband and I don't mind it but it is starting to get very crowded even in our king-size bed. Any suggestions on how you might've gotten your children to move from your bed to their own? I really could use some tips!

What can I do next?

Hi A. P, I had the same problem with my soon to be 3 year old when it was time to break him out of his crib, he either wanted to sleep in the crib or with my husband and I...so we allowed that to go on for awhile until we started lacking in sleep, then i purchased a bed tent that went with his big boy bedroom set and he now gladly hops in his own bed every night because he loves sleeping under the tent...maybe you could give me some advice on how to potty train him because that is not going to well with us and i know its partly my fault because i get busy with my 8 month old and forget to put him on the potty as often as i should so it has been unsuccessful...thanks, T. c

I've heard some add a single bed off to the side and transition that way. Someone I know said that they put a small bed in their room and didn't even say anything at first to their daughter. She noticed it on her own and was excited about it.. then she moved them to another room.

Maybe you could have a mattress in the other room and sleep there for a bit until the child is used to it?

I think there are some tips in the No Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers.

Good for you for asking advice... we're co-sleepers here too.. it just works for us and nursing. I like my sleep.

I think co-sleeping is totally crazy and nuts. I think it is a bad idea from the start and just sets the kids up for a transition that will be hard.

Hey, if you want to do it (it sounds like a lot do) obviously that's your decision and that's cool, but I really do think it is crazy to even start it! I guess I just don't understand WHY people do it or start it in the first place. Our daughter who is almost two had had no problems ever sleeping in her crib....she slept in our room for the first 3 months seperate and then we moved her to her crib she cried for 2 nights and ever since she has slept grerat. Goes to bed between 8 and 8:30 and wakes between 8:30 and 9:00am. So I guess I just really don't understand why to even start co-sleeping....It's obviously more for the parents then the kids!!

Good luck,
S.

love co sleeping - you dont see kangaroos throwing there babies in another room do ya? ok ok whatever!

I am co sleeping with my one year old currently but have three older. my son (now 15) was tricky to move out at 3. Ultimately what worked was buying a down comforter for him. It felt like mommys blankie and ended up working for us!

Hooray for co-sleeping!! I know it does get crowded as everyone grows. We had 3 in with us...king size bed of course. Ours eventually moved to the floor next to the bed and then on to a double bed altogether (I put them in the short way) The three of them were close in age so they were like a litter of kittens that liked the closeness of eachother. Maybe once your little nurser is weaned you could put them in together, even in a twin bed...one side on the wall/the other with a guard rail. That way they still have someone to snuggle and you can get some sleep.
