Chronic Sore Thoat? or Something More Serious?

I have had a sore throat for about 4 weeks now. I always get one with any cold, so I didn't pay much attention the first week, but the second week, I went to a quickie place and was put on amoxicillin. I thought it got a bit better, but it picked back up in week 3. I saw an NP Thurs. She did a (very) quick exam, looked down my throat, and put me on another antibiotic. I'm on day 3 with no relief.
I am starting to get a little nervous! I know it could be nothing, or it could be something scary, like throat cancer. I have a couple environmental risk factors for throat cancer, so it is on my mind a bit. I'm supposed to complete 10 days on the antibiotic, then go back to the doctor's office.
Just looking for some others' experiences here...anyone ever experienced a chronic sore throat? What caused it? Throat cancer? What were your symptoms?
I've googled what I can, am seeing a doctor, and am not asking an of you here to diagnose me :) Just looking for some (reassuring) feedback...or honest feedback.
Thanks Mamas!

So What Happened?

You know, the NP mentioned allergies, but I just REALLY feel like I don't have any other symptoms. Like, shouldn't I have a runny nose, sneezing, itchy watery eyes, etc.?
I appreciate all the answers so far! Thanks!

P.:

if the antibiotics are not working? It's most likely allergies.

Have you been tested for allergies? If not - you should consider getting it done. That's what typically causes a long-term sore throat - allergies from post nasal drip.

If you are a smoker - then you might worry about throat cancer - but I think you are jumping the gun and freaking out over nothing but allergies.

Good luck!

Sound like allergies to me, especially since it is allergy season. I have a chronic sore throat during allergy season. See an allergist.

My first guess since you've had it for 4 weeks and it didn't really clear up after antibotics is allergies. Even if you have never been diagnosed it still could be allergies. I have a slightly sore throat most of the time and that is the cause.

I have seasonal allergies (I am sure, haven't been diagnosed) and get a sore throat from time to time. A few doses of an antihistimine always help me.

Please don't use Dr. Google--he always makes us fear the worst ;-)

I have chronic post nasal drip. My throat used to always be sore but I think I am just so used to it my body doesn't recognize it as pain any more. Frequently my doc will ask if I have a sore throat because it looks irritated but it doesn't even hurt anymore.
Try not to think the worst. If your doctor is prescribing antibiotics I would think it is because they see an infection.
FYI...my mom had strep throat for 8 months.

I have sore throats frequently and nearly always they are caused by a post nasal drip which is caused by allergies. It is prime allergy season right now. I use a cortisone nasal spray to help with the allergies. I've also take OTC decongestant/antihistamine combinations that helped. My go to product is Sudafed, the original one that you have to get from behind the counter.

If you still have a cold or a sinus infection you will also have a post nasal drip. That will cause a sore throat. A decongestant will help with that. Sudafed, the original, always clears mine up in a few days.

I can feel the post nasal drip. It's a sort of squishy feeling behind my epiglotis, the piece that hangs down at the back of the mouth in front of the throat. And I often have no other symptoms. What symptoms you have depends on your particular body's response to the allergens.

I would not continue to take antibiotics. If your sore throat is caused by an infection it's nearly 99% certain to be caused by a virus. I'm surprised that they gave you antibiotics. The doctors at my clinic and my daughter's clinic do not give them for a sore throat unless we've tested positive for strep. There is a quick test that can be done while you wait.

And I frequently wake up with a sore throat because I'm a mouth breather when asleep. Most days the soreness goes away after I eat or drink something but not always.

Know that if your throat is irritated because of the cold, it will be more sensitive to other conditions.

I urge you to stop considering that it's cancer. What are your environmental risks? Unless you've been a heavy smoker for several years it's highly unlikely for you to have throat cancer.

Acid Reflux, Allergies because you have a small amount of constant drainage, you may not even realize it.
Sleeping with your mouth open and snoring.

There are lots of reasons.

Besides allergies, acid reflux can cause sore throats. Or your tonsils could be scarred from the constant sore throats. See an ENT for a definitive answer.

Is your throat swollen at all? I had something similar with what i thought was swollen glands and it ended up that my thyroid was swollen.

If it isn't swollen, I agree with the others about possible allergies.

Finish the antibiotic. If you don't, you are setting yourself up for bigger problems like antibiotic resistant problems.
It takes 3 to 5 days for the antibiotic to make you feel better. Give it time.
I find that Amoxicillin doesn't work for me and that I usually have to go back for something else.
YMMV

Get an exam by an ENT. Just a couple of middle aged men I know have had throat CA lately. It is on the rise in men because of the HPV virus. It's probably nothing but better check on it.

I have chronic sore throats which are very annoying, but not cancer. My mother had a sore throat that went on last year for months, and then she was diagnosed with throat cancer. She has never smoked and is not a drinker. It was a shock for us, but the great thing is that treatment for throat cancer has improved greatly in the past few years. She is now recovering well. Keep an eye on your symptoms, but don't be overly anxious. It's most likely to be nothing.

Try gargling with brown vinegar. Sore throats change the pH balance in the throat to acid and the vinegar is a base. I don't know if there is something bad going on or not, but I think I'd be getting to an ENT if I were you. You also might want to see your dentist in case there's a connection to your teeth.

So sorry this is happening. I don't have reassuance for you, but I do think you should try the vinegar trick. If it's too strong for you, put a little water in it. Use it a couple of times a day.

Best of luck in this.
