Actually I got my son an ornament every Christmas which reflected something he liked or was interested in at that point in his life. For instance, I got him a Cat in the Hat ornament, Rugrats ornament, boardgame ornament, ESPN ornament, etc; as he has always been athletic I got him various sports ornaments--soccer, basketball, etc. Thus the ornaments always reflect him and something he participates in or loves. This year he is a college freshman and I may pick him up a Wolverine ornament (thanks for reminding me!!!!)

every year each person in my house gets to pick an ornament that they like, when the kids were to young I would pick what I thought they were into that year, we like going to the store and looking at all the ornaments and choosing the one that fits us best that year. I have the best luck at Hallmark and Bronners

I'd stick with Hallmark or something that has themes that aren't always girlie. Boys are very sensitive about that stuff. Maybe animals or sports or something.

We just put up our tree. Ever year I buy an ornament to reflect the year. My son loved firetrucks at 3 and so I found a firetruck. He started baseball, I got a baseball type ornament. He just started the saxaphone, so ...a sax ornament. When they put them up they do pull up memories. Just a thought.

Hi L.,

What I do for my kids is I buy one of the ornaments where I can put their picture in for them. My son is 6 and he now has 7 ornaments with his picture in them. I started the same for my daughter last year.

Also I buy them an ornament of what they are into. The first year my son always stuck out his tongue for snowflakes so we actually found one of the clay one's with a boy sticking his tounge out to catch a snowflake, then he was totally into Sesame street, then Cars, Mickey Mouse, The polar Express, super hero's and now Star Wars. My sister buys him an ornament that represents what he is crazy about each year. It's a great way to remember what he was into each year of his life.

It's awesome you want to do this too. My son had some new friends he just met this year and they told him the tree was sooo cool because they could see what he looked liked growing up and they liked all of his ornaments. It made me feel really good about doing this for him and my daughter. I never really realized how "cool" this is until this year. This way he will have alot of ornaments that he can take with him when he gets married.

Merry Christmas! I hope you have a wonderful holiday.

Just thought of one thing. My son is into Star Wars right now and he loves playing with my husband's toys from when he was a kid. How cool would it be if your child had an ornament that their kid will some day be into.

Although they are pricey, Hallmark is one of your best bets for collections for boys. Also Bronner's in Frankenmuth as well. Precious Moments and Snowbabies are really for girls and little ones. Also, I just buy what is significant for my sons and daughter at regular stores and/or craft shows. IE. my son is an avid soccer player so I try and get him a soccer ornament with his name and the year.

Dr. Seuss or Rodolph and the misfits are good ones. Sports, trains or Drums.

I have found that many places end up changing their stock, discontinue themes, go out of business, or something to this extent so it can be very challenging to stick to a theme.

If I were to do this, I would consider purchasing glass bulb ornaments to hand-craft at home. If your son has a particular interest, it is very easy to customize these ornaments to that theme. (or to develop the theme you have in mind.)

Best of all... when you craft an ornament by hand, it's more treasured, valued and carries more sentiment that most of those purchased. (In my opinion, anyway.)
It doesn't take nearly as long as many think and with the kits available, it's very easy to do.

I love going to my family and seeing the hand-painted and crafted ornaments I have made for them - it's very touching and each ornament not only carries the memory for me, but for that person receiving it.

What I do (and my mom did for us), was rather than stick to a certain 'brand' was to find one each year that represented something special in our life that year. For example, this year my daughter really likes gymnastics and has started taking classes so we got her a gymnast ornament. My son really likes trucks and tools and I was able to find a dump truck ornament so he is getting that one this year. Bronners is also a good place to look for ornaments - either at the store on online.

Lenox does ornaments every year. They do them in multiple themes. Each theme gets a new ornament every year. Santa, snowflakes, snowmen, they may even have trains. Check out their website www.lenox.com and you can find them at outlets too. Sometimes I find them at TJ Maxx and stores like that.

I started a collection for my girls too. I started letting them pick their own when they turned 2 or 3. It's fun to see what they pick every year. Last year my youngest was REALLY into Tinkerbell. She picked out a Tink ornament. Now when we pull it out of the box every year we can remember that Tinkerbell filled year!

Either way you choose to go I'm sure your children will love it. I love seeing my ornaments that were once hung on my parent's tree. It's wonderful memories

Good Luck and Merry Christmas!

Picture your boy at 20 and think if he'll like them at that age. I think a little boy at 3 or so would by okay with precious moments or snowbabies, but later in life?? Not so much.

My mom did a Christmas around the world thing for my brother. Every year he got an ornament from a different country.

What about nutcrackers? Or just santa ornaments? They don't have to be from one specific line. Hallmark also does different series. I have the entire collection of Mary's Angels (like 20 years worth). I get one a year from my parents, but I know that they have other series too. I also like the idea of getting him an ornament each year that symbolizes something he did or loved that year. That's what we are doing for our boy. One day he can look back and remember the year that he loved batman or the year we went to disneyworld...

Rather than buying an actual collection of ornaments (like Hallmark) for me, my mom always bought an ornament that fit my interests - she would get me ballet-themed ornaments (since I was a dancer) as well as snow skiing (a hobby of mine) and angels (starting in college - my sorority's "mascot" is an angel). I know that it wasn't a consistent theme over the years but I really enjoyed getting these ornaments and she would often write the year, using a Sharpie, on the bottom or back of the ornament.
