Chiropractors & Young Children

Have you ever taken your young child to one? It was suggested to me when my daughter was colicky but I never took her because I hadn't known anyone to actually do it. Now she's battling constipation (8 months on miralax - her sister was on miralax 7 years and a behavior therapist for over a year!) and I've heard a chiropractor can help with digestive issues too. any thoughts?

What can I do next?

Chiropractors are great for people of all ages. Ideally, we should have children adjusted as soon as they are born because the birthing process is h*** o* them. Yes, I have taken my children to chiropractors. One of my friends has a daughter who was having constipation issues as a baby. On the way home from the chiro, she had a blow-out diaper. ;)

I have taken both my children to the chiropractor for various issues from toddlers on up with success. However I have a chiropractor that was referred to me by people I trust and he is experienced working on children- he has two young children himself.

I know one lady who took her infant and said after one adjustment the colicky crying jags stopped.

personally I have been burnt as an adult by "professionals" in that business so I would not take my child to one. A chiropractor's poor ability (came highly reccomended) caused major back surgery because he did not admit from the start that it was more than he could handle and he only made it worse.

yes both of mine. the doc i go to is very friendly and gentle. if you meet the doc or even maybe them adjust you before you take your child in may ease any concerns you have. make sure the one you go to has worked on children before and you should be fine. i would highly suggest it. one of mine has bowel issues and the other was in the car when this lady decided to not pay attention and rear end me. both of us are good to go and happily aligned. :)

Maybe try finding a DO physician in your area who can do some manipulative treatments (just like a chiropractor) & also be able to offer some medical advice on the digestive issues. It's really the best of both worlds- getting a medical doctor & a chiropractor in one. Good luck!

Oh YES Chiropractor saved my "colicky" son who really was not colicky he was in pain his back was so our of adjustment, three visits and he went from sleeping only an hour at a time at night to sleeping 16 hours straight, he also had been on reflux meds and was off of those by a week and a half, 7 visits total. He was between 7-9 months at the time. Our kids go at least once every 3 months. Chiropratic care is huge, Just think about what their little bodies go through every day especially the first two years.

Not all Chiro's are the same so find one that works with your family. We prefer the "Diversified treatment" If they graduatued from Palmer College of Chiropractic I would say they are most likely going to be good. Just my thoughts.

I don't know about taking a baby to a chiropractor but I would advise to STOP giving her the miralax!!! That stuff is toxic and no good and I can't believe DRs are still putting kids on it!!

I have been taking my son to the chiro since he was 2 months old. It helped with the spitting up all the time and also helped him sleep so much better. I would highly recommend it.

I took both my boys in for work when they were a few weeks old to help with constipation and colicky bahavior. The adjustments are mild and subtle. I see Patty Enstead at ###-###-#### (east St. Paul). She specialized in miofacial massage and cranial sacral (sp?), which I liked b/c it felt more gentle than the chiropractic adjustments I received. Granted, I've never had my ciropractor work on my kids so maybe adult adjustments are differents from kid adjustments. Anyway, it helped the boys. Also, I didn't want them on miralax so we use prune or pear juice instead. I'd rather try to holistic approach first. Good luck!!!

I took my daughter to an osteopath (chiropracty is one element of osteopathy) when she was 18 months. Subtle craniosacral manipulation cured her ear infections.

All of my boys have been seeing chiros since birth. My youngest got his first adjustment at 1 week old. The birthing process is very traumatic on the spine (which makes sense if you think about it) so the adjustments help put the spine back into proper alignment. Make sure you find someone that is experienced with children. There are a lot of pediatric chiros out there you just have to search.

My son had repeated ear infections and constant fluid in both ears. The ENT recommended tubes and I decided to try taking DS to a chiropractor before resorting to surgery. We never needed the surgery. Three visits and the fluid was gone and never returned. I highly recommend trying chiropractic for a number of issues. As a teenager I had debilitating stomach pain. My ped told my mom I had an ulcer. My mom took me to her chiro and it turned out I had subluxation in my middle back that was impinging on the nerve to my stomach. After a few adjustments by the chiro, the stomach pains were gone.

Hopefully you are getting some good recommendations for kid knowledgable chiropractors in your area. An exam should tell them whether there are things out of place in your child's spine that could explain the digestive issues.

I've been taking my almost four year old son since birth. He LOVES going and YES and alignment will help with bowel movements. In fact that was one of the first things my doctor said to me. He said "be prepared." :)

Now my son freaks out if drive PAST the chiro. He points and yells at me "go back mom, we need to go see Dr. Don and go on the table." In fact my son ranks seeing "Dr. Don" up with going to Chuck E. Cheese!

Seeing a chiropractor has basically given me my life BACK. I was in so much pain I was miserable all day long and never slept very well. That's all changed in the last five years. It also helped me lose that baby weight because I could go back to working-out and not be in pain.

Try it out! You'll love it.

I get adjusted at the chiropractor about once every 6 weeks or so and I have been bringing my son with to get adjusted also since birth. I do go to a chiropractor who has taken special courses specializing in infants and pediatrics. I also dealt with constipation issues with my son for over a year, which was very frustrating. Going to the chiropractor regularly did seem to help my son be more regular, yes, although it did not solve the problem completely. It may be worth a try, but make sure the chiropractor you choose has good experience with infants. Also try adding Benefiber to help with constipation?

I have 3 boys (14, 5 and 3) and they all go to the chiropractor. My 14 yr old has mild scroliosis so he goes most often. We were already taking him but it was suggested by his dr too. My 3 yr old started going at 3 weeks for colic and constipation. I was nursing and he was only going 1 time a week! First visit to the chiro and he pooped that night even though he had gone the night before! Totally worth going!!
