Child with Strabismus...Anyone Have Pediatric Opthamologists to Recommend?

Hi,

My little girl (8 months) has strabismus (intermittent exotropia). We are currently patching her strong eye, but know that surgery will be in her future if it gets progressively worse. Does anyone who lives in the Kansas City area have a doctor they would recommend or surgeon? I know this isn't a common problem, but hoping to touch base with someone dealing with similar issues. Thank you.

What can I do next?

I can't help with any recommendations in your area, however, just wanted to let you know that my 3 year old just had surgery on her right eye for exotropia almost 2 weeks ago. She had exotropia since she was about 1 and we did the patching up until the surgery. It helped some, but her eye still basically stayed the same. It's only been 2 weeks and her eye is still recovering, but so far it looks really good and there has been no outward movement. I was extremely nervous about surgery in her eye, but am now so glad we did it even though we know there's still a possibility it can come back. Good luck to you and your little one.

You might consider taking her to a chiropractor. After my son had 2 surgeries, because one normally isn't enough, I found out that sometimes chiros can work with the nerves to get the weak eye working properly. It is definitely worth checking to see if your daughter's case can be helped this way.

I would recommend Dr. Gerhard Cibis, he has an office on the plaza. He has seen my daughter since she was couple months old.

i don't know of any in that area, but I know you can google your city and find ones with big credentials. I was at the zoo with my daughter then 3 J. as her eye started to shift and made an appt for the dr, well i saw this little girl with glasses and commented that i lovedthem and that my daughter would probably need them. I lucked out she was a doc at one of the biggest hospitals and told M. where all of the doctors took their kids. So maybe ask arnd to other people with kids with glasses in your area? f you have any other kids I'm sure some of their friends have glasses, ask their moms
