Child Modeling - McKinney, TX

I never thought in a million years that I would be even considering this, much less even wanting information about it, but does anyone have any experience with going to open calls for child modeling? I received a notice from The Great American Model and Talent Search who apparently does open casting calls for all ages to try out for being selected for print ads and even commercials and tv. I'm curious as to what happens at one of these open calls and if it's a pleasurable experience, or if it's stressful and time-consuming.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to say thanks so much to all the moms who responded to my inquiry about child modeling. I wasn't planning to attend the open call for the Great American blah, blah, blah thing, but it's very helpful to know that it would have been the sort of experience that I would have been trying to avoid. Thanks again to all you great moms on Mamasource!!

Please DO NOT participate in ANY type of modeling/acting contests or listings that require any amount of money up front no matter what the money is for. They are not legit! Also some of them claim to not charge you for their services but they do require you to use their photogs and buy their portfolio packages or to go to their audition/prep classes and seminars. Those are almost always scams also. Keep in mind even real agents will of course need you to go out and get headshots. You will end up paying hundreds for a photography session as well getting the prints made. So there is a cash outlay with no guarantee of recouping your money. As someone already mentioned, reputable agents will not charge you upfront, they only operate on a percentage of your actual earnings (typically 10-20%). And yes, even the reputable casting calls and auditions can be stressful and time consuming, especially where kids are concerned.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to message me. I am an actress and know many kids in the industry.

Hi S.-

I would say beware of anything with the words "Great American..." in it. Coming from LA, they scream "SHOW ME YOUR MONEY". Now a legit agency I would recommend would be Kim Dawson or Campbell in Dallas. I know the Dawson agency doesn't do any type of child cattle calls and if you want to send pics in, you can. Their website has all the specifics.
I've been trying to get my DD represented and so far, no luck. As parents, we ALL think our children are gorgeous, so there is a lot of competition for those of us whose kids REALLY are <WINK>. ;) Good luck and let me know if you find out anything good! ;)

Hi S.,

My little boy who is 3 1/2 does modeling for The Nancy Campbell Agency in Dallas. I never thought in a million years, we would do something like this either. But I have to say, my little guy LOVES it!!!

Through The Nancy Campbell Agency (you can google) they have you send in 8 to 10 household photos of your child. They then will notify you to come in for a meeting. DO NOT SPEND ANY MONEY, if a company ask for any kind of set up fee they are not legit!

For more information feel free to call me.

Best of Luck!

Google this company (also under the name of Aquinas or something - it will show up). EVERYONE got this mass postcard. Supposedly, everyone gets a "call back". They have you come to Pennsylvania where there corp. office is. The same "casting agents", etc. are there working. Anyway, you pay the expenses of traveling there, airfaire, hotel, etc., then, they charge you like a $525 "entry" fee and I think like $59 per person entry fee to the "talent" search. Just google it and you will see all the lawsuits against them, etc.

One of my friends here locally tried it with her daughter a couple of years ago. She sank alot of money into getting a high quality portfolio done of her daughter. And they wanted updated pics every 6 months since she was so young. She tried for dozens of print ads, but only landed one, and it wasn't anything special. Her husband put a stop to it when he realized she spent thousands in clothing and portfolio expenses.
On the other hand, my cousin in CA does it with both her kids. Her daughter has been featured in some nationwide print ads for Clorox cleaners and Old Navy. They HAVE the money to put into it, and the grandmother runs the kids all over LA to appointments. I asked her what their goal and motivation was behind it, and she said it definitely wasn't money LOL. Her kids are a handful as it is, so I don't know if that adds to their stress level or not.

If it's something you can put the time and money into, then I say go for it. But remember the stress and where to draw the line for you and your family. And remember some of those places are just a scam. Go with your gut feeling on that. Good luck!

S.,

RUN away from scams like that!!! It's a big scam. If you are serious about your children modeling, you can do it right here in the Dallas area. My children have been modeling for 7 years now. You never pay up front to get bookings for your child. E-mail me privately and I will be happy to share info with you.
