Cds for Daughter

My daughter is 6 and wants to listen to "grown up" music now. We have tons of kid CDs in the car and always have. I don't listen to the radio when they are in the car, because the music is often questionable/inappropriate. Anyway, just looking for suggestions for a little older kiddos. I've looked at Kids Bop and am not against it...any others? If you listen to Christian music, who are some of the artists that younger kids might enjoy? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Point of Grace is a great group to introduce her to. I love their music and they do conferences for girls when they get to their teens. Also, my niece and nephew always liked Jump 5, Addison Road. Try some of the WOW hits CDs. They have a variety of artists on them.

Kidz Bob works for us. Popular music, but they change the words where appropriate so the songs are cleaner. Both my 8 year old and 3 year old like them.

Try radio Disney. If you don't have satellite radio, you can go to their website and listen. It's top 40 minus the more risqué songs. There are a lot of songs by kids from Disney shows, in case that's not your thing.

My daughter loves the kids bop cd, and also Lemonade Mouth. Both are kid friendly. My daughter also loves to listen to the cd from VBS this year. If your kids attended or your church sponsored one, that is a great source of music. Mine still ask for the VBS music in the car. :)

My kids love this one best.

Ok this is not "adult music" BUT these groups are so fun to sing along with.

They Might Be Giants (Kids CD's)
-- Here Comes Science
-- Here Comes the ABC's
-- Here Comes the 123's
-- No!

Laurie Berkner Band
-- Too many great CDs to list

Frank Sinatra
Billie holiday
various broadway hits cds
Amy Grant (at least her old albums)
Sixpence None the Richer
Glad

If you are looking for Christian Music maybe find a local Christian book store and see what they have, some in my area you can listen to a few tracks on the CD or the whole CD to see if you or your child likes it before buying it.

In the end you are the parent, if you decide to not let them listen that that is the way it has to be.

Our family loves listening to Hillsong and Hillsong Kids or United the band name from Hillsong. You can find some of their stuff on you tube. It's nice to hear your children praising God when they sing.

My niece LOVES Taylor Swift. I would be OK with that, if I had a daughter. She dresses nicely, her lyrics are harmless, and she seems like a really good young lady. (My guilty pleasure, I actually love Taylor Swift :) She also likes these bands called Jump5 and pureNRG which are Christian bands. (I googled it, that's the actually spelling...) I know this will sound weird, but have you tried bluegrass? For some reason, every child I know who was introduced to blugrass, loved it! I personally love the Peasall Sisters and The Secret Sisters.

Try listening to 89.7 Power FM. It is probably for a little older kids but she might like something. It is a Christian Rock station. She would probably like the daytime listening best. Try Hawk Nelson.
Good Luck!

Check out "Go Fish" guys. They are a kids Christian group, but it's music that my husband and I sing along with too. They do original pieces as well as really cool arrangements of bible class songs or childhood nursery rhymes. My boys also love many songs on the radio Christian stations. My station pretty much stays on KLTY (94.9) or the new one-The Journey- 88.3 (but this is out of Burleson and not as strong a signal, so may not be very clear depending on where you live). 89.7 Power FM is also good, but it's "heavier" Christian rock, whereas the other stations might be more pop/rock Christian. Just depends on what type of music she likes.

Also, have to comment about a suggested artist. I love Jason Mraz, but he is NOT a Christian artist. Most of his songs are harmless, and he does have a great reggae/bluesy sound, but he curses in more than one of his songs and many of his songs have some additional innuendos if you follow closely. I have one of his CD's and I would let my kids (6 and 3) listen to most of it, but not all of it. Just a warning in case you weren't familiar with this particular artist.

I know you asked for CD's which I'll share some artists in a minute but we listen to KLTY 94.9 on the radio, they really do follow a kid friendly format all the time, My Kids love it and sing along with all most all the songs.

we love:
Steven Curtis Chapman
Casting Crowns
Toby Mac (LOVE him for up beat kid friendly music)
Brandon Heath
Chris Tomlin
Mandisa
Nicole C Mullen
Nicole Nordeman
Petra (for old 80's style christian Rock)
Franchesca Batistelli (not sure how she spells her name)
Johnny Diaz
Jeremy Camp

there are so many choices, if you listen to KLTY you can learn the names and songs your kids will gravitate to. when I first started listening it took me about a week to really start learning all the songs and artists ( I didn't know any of them when I first turned it on) good luck! ps I have 3 boys so they usually like male artists better, and I think it is important for them to have that influence... but I listen to a lot of female singers when they are not around, if you need any more recommendations just let me know!

Why don't you make her some CD's?
My kids grew up listening to all kinds of music from opera to klezmer.

There are lots of songs that you can all enjoy listening to.

Here are some that were my kids favorites when they were little.

Silly Love Songs - Paul McCartney and Wings
Love Train - O'Jays
Oh Very Young - Cat Stevens
Lovely Day - Bill Withers
Everything is Beautiful - Ray Stevens
Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John & Kiki Dee
Blackbird - The Beatles
Here Comes the Sun - George Harrison
Sweet Freedom - Michael McDonald
Higher Love - Steve Winwood
Down to the River to Pray - Alison Krauss
Your Smiling Face - James Taylor
Pennies from Heaven - Billie Holiday
Diamond Girl - Seal & Crofts
Ventura Highway - America
You Make My Dreams Come True - Hall & Oates
Year of the Cat - Al Stewart

I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions, but there really are some older songs that are pretty harmless and free of hype.
I have to admit I really like Katie Perry's "Firework".

Have fun.
You can search almost everything on youtube and listen to it first to see if you think it's okay.
That way, you can make a compilation.

Best wishes.

try a variety of genres & see what she likes: bluegrass, old-school rock n roll, disco.....you might be surprised at what catches her interest!

What I like about adding in the old stuff to the contemporary/top 40...is that your child will have an expanded knowledge of the music world & will always be ready to sing karaoke! I like that all of the kids in our extended family can sing anything & everything!

My daughter (also six) likes Phil Wickham, Chris August, and I really love Jeremy Camp myself. Those are all Christian artists.

They Might Be Giants are my favorite band, and my daughter loves it. They're fun, quirky...they do make a few children's albums, but we listen to the real albums.

We also like to listen to Schoolhouse Rock together....lots of fun, sounds like adult music, but educational.

What else? Bob Marley, Keane, Charlie Brown album, Swing Kids soundtrack, Gordon Lightfoot, Don Williams, the Beatles, Raffi...

Oh, and the best are probably oldies. We listen to lots of music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s...the classic 50s rock (she loves Poison Ivy, Willie and the Hand Jive, Personality, Poetry in Motion...those are just examples)...from the 60s, we listen to things like Green Tambourine, Grazing in the Grass, etc...and 70s pop as well, like Paul Simon, earlier Elton John, etc. Love it all. :)

Oh, someone else also mentioned the Nutcracker...don't discount classical music!! My daughter has LOVED the Nutcracker and Swan Lake for years, as well as a ton of other classical music. She listens to NPR! :) I also agree that Peter and the Wolf is great (I've been a fan since I was young) and you know what else totally rocks?

The soundtrack from Wall-E. It's become a favorite of mine....BEAUTIFUL music, mostly instrumental, but a few with lyrics.

My 6 year old son binged on the Nutcracker CD from November-June. That got replaced by his Vacation Bible School music which then got merged with songs from a CD our church gave us.

If you're looking for a good Christian band, check out The Afters. They're a local band getting national attention and my son knows the words to several of the songs.

theafters.com

He likes a lot of mainstream music too, but that is 1-2 songs by a particular artist... not a single artist that he really likes.

my son (4) loves music and it is always on. if you have a computer, or a smart phone...PANDORA is the way to go. i put in different stations for him. I have a MercyMe station, a coldplay station, Disney station that plays only songs from movies (jungle book, tangled, little mermaid....he loves it; even though he hasn't seen a lot of movies), a movie score station ...his FAVORITE...all instrumental scores from several movies (narnia, ben hur, etc)
it's nice because it is tailored to what you enter...you can get a couple that you may not think appropriate, but there is a skip button you can push. start with that, but then maybe burn a cd w/ some favorites you come across from there???

She's not too young to be introduced to classical music. Seriously. Kids this age are open to so much -- no kid has told them yet "That's boring!" or "Why do you listen to that stuff?!"

Here are some ideas:

--Go to www.classicsforkids.com for a lot of ideas and online audio files--you click and you and your child can hear lots of snippets from lots of pieces and decide ones you'd like to hear more of.
--Try her out on any good recording of "Peter and the Wolf," which is a story but has accompanying music that personifies each animal character. (There is a good version narrated by the actor Patrick Stewart from maybe a decade or more back.) This is many kids' first introduction to classical music.
--Get her "The Carnival of the Animals" by Saint-Saens; that also typifies each animal with wonderful music that really sounds just like you'd imagine animals to sound! You will find that you recognize lots of the pieces here from their use in TV, movies, ads, etc. Get her to guess which animal each piece of music represents, the first time you listen to it together!
--Find the CD, easily available at Amazon etc., called "Beethoven Lives Upstairs." This is a wonderful book that you can get with the story on CD and it also uses snippets of Beethoven's music, since the story's about a boy whose family rents a room to Beethoven. This is a real kids' classic and a good introduction to classical music. Don't just get the book, though -- get the CD with the story read aloud and the music included.
--There are other musical stories along the lines of "Beethoven Lives Upstairs" that blend stories about musicians with their music. I believe there's one about Mozart and one about Vivaldi as well -- search on them.
--Show her a video of the ballet "The Nutcracker"; if you can, take her to see a live production of it near Christmas, when it's put on all over the place. You probably have a local ballet school that will do it around Christmas (or even a professional ballet company nearby). It's probably the easiest ballet for kids to get to see because it's widely done. Much of the music will be familiar, to you and maybe even to her, and it's short and very, very kid-friendly in any version you see--dancing fairies, giant mice, dancing flowers, kids at a party, etc. Terrific introduction both to classical music and to ballet. Even kids who know nothing about ballet will enjoy it just as a fun show. I'd follow it up with a CD of the music to listen to--tons of inexpensive recordings of "The Nutcracker" abound.

Have fun. You both will really enjoy exploring things. My daughter loves classical because she started dancing young, so was used to hearing "music without words" from a very early age and this kind of music really lets kids use their imaginations to make up stories that go along with the music, rather than letting someone's lyrics always create the images for them. Nothing against pop songs etc. but classical really is a great addition to that. My daughter has been to pop concerts, Broadway style musicals and classical concerts, and plenty of ballets of course, and likes all of those kinds of music because she's been exposed to all of them, so variety in what you listen to together is important.
