I have finally decided to take the plunge and purchase a DSLR camera. I rarely make such a big purchase but it is something I have wanted for a long time so I am saving up any birthday money I get. I will be purchasing either a Cannon or a Nikon but I don't know a lot about the best models and the important things to look for. Can you help me out? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

I have had my Nikon for 1 1/2 years and LOVE it! One of the best things I ever bought. I got mine at Costco and at the time the package came with the bigger lense as well, with a couple of other goodies.

I personally find Nikon's more user friendly. The Nikon D500, is a very good camera. What I love about it, is it's very beginner friendly...AND...can really grow with you into more advanced photography. The body is only so important, though. The lenses are what you really want to be mindful of. When you get really into photography, you will find you need different types of lenses, for different effects, speeds, landscapes etc. Below is a link to an AWESOME website, for any digital photography info. you might want. You can search for whatever you're trying to learn and there is surely information on it. Good luck!!

I just got the Nikon D3100. (it's new out and was on Oprah's favorite things.) And I have to say, I am super impressed. Nikon is taking over the market for professional cameras and this D3100 is the closest thing to professional without buying the next step up much larger camera. It has the potential to take professional pics once you learn to really use it.

The Nikon D3100 also does HD video which is brilliant!

My parents and brother are professional photographers and it's NIKON all the way. With my family being in the photography field, I also have many friends who are photographers and ALL of them shoot with Nikon.

Also, I would recommend paying a little more and buying it from a professional camera shop. They give lessons (mine were free) so that you learn how to use it to it's full extent and they deal with any issues with sending it away to be fixed or serviced. Buying it online can sometimes void your warranty and you definitely don't get the help like you do with a camera shop.

Hope this helps!

My husband and 16 year old daughter LOVE their Cannon Rebels. My husband actually has the newest model with several lenses.
I have a little Cannon SureShot that I like, because I took a class with my husband's big camera and was able to transfer most of what I learned to the little digital as well.

Now having said that, we have a good friend who loves his Nikon.

People who use Cannons or Nikons are pretty exchangeable. In FACT there's a really funny article on just that subject (cannon v nikon v sony v pentax v olympus v leica). (What your camera says about you, by Gordon Lewis... full article found here, although it's posted in many places across the web since it doesn't have a 'do not reproduce' clause http://shutterfinger.typepad.com/shutterfinger/2010/10/wh...)

Personally I own and love Nikons & Leicas. It's been 10 years. Probably another 10 before I "switch" ;)

Another vote for Nikon. We have a D70 and a D90. You can read lots of reviews of Nikon cameras and lenses at http://www.bythom.com/nikon.htm. Also a good resource if you do eventually by a Nikon!

Good luck!

Whether you buy a Canon or Nikon DSLR you won't go wrong. They are both fantastic camera systems. I have had a Canon DSLR for over 7 years now (currently own the 40D), and I personally love it. Before you buy, an important thing to consider is how much you want to invest in the system and making good choices on how you use that money. The camera body itself you will eventually replace/upgrade. However if you take care of your lenses you will always have them. I purchased a Canon lens 10 years ago to use with a Canon film camera, and I now use it with my DSLR. I also bought a pro-level lens a couple of years ago, and the difference in the photos was amazing. Don't skimp on the lenses.

Canon and Nikon are both great cameras. Once you are a lover of one, you usually stick to it, it become too expensive to switch.

They both do the same job. Canons are normally a little warmer than the Nikon, otherwise they are both great cameras.

The more important thing to look for is differences in the models you select. Do an online side by side comparison of the models. That will help you decide what is best for your needs.

We have cannons and love them. We started with a rebel many years ago when it first came out and currently have a couple of newer ones. The lenses really make more of a difference than the camera body when you are taking pictures. We do a lot of bird photography and with the larger lenses you can really tell a difference in using the nicer lenses. For general use- people, pets, landscapes it is not as noticable always. The 7D is our newest and it is amazing, but it is heavier than some of the others since it has more functions, etc. We got one refurbished one online that cannon had repaired and it works great. We had one problem with one of ours when it was just over a year old and out of warranty and Cannon still repaired it at no charge. The problem was a shutter issue and most likely from the hard use and number of picutres we had already taken with the camera.

I do know people with a Nikon that also like them. I would say go to a camera store and try them all out in the store and see what you like.

is a good website to look at different cameras and compare them.

I would definatly go for the Cannon. I have a Rebel and it is amazing! I also have a Nikon and I dont like it, the pictures come out grainy and just not good, but with my Cannon, the photos are clear, crisp, and wonderful. I wouldnt buy any other camera brand ever.

I belong to a photography club and the members are split down the middle... But.... most of the Professionals use Nikon..... Just remember to check the prices of the lens...... They are not cheap!! Very shortly you will want to buy more than what comes with it!!! I agree with going to a camera shop, they might even have used ones. Also I don't know your skill level but you also need to look at the settings......... If you are a beginner..... make sure it has an auto setting....... and use that to learn manual. Remember too....... that it's not the camera that takes the pictures.......... if you're good you can take a great picture with a point and shoot!!!!!! I know too many people who have bought complicated cameras and have no idea how to use them and can't take a good picture to save their life!!!! What ever you decide....... have fun!!!
