Hi all. My house is being attacked by the stomach bug that's going around. I stayed home from work today and the kids went to my moms. On the way home my son gets sick all over the car and himself :(. Now just my husband and daughter are the only ones not sick. Depending on what happens tonight- do bosses understand if you take multiple days off? I work in a very small office and am on salary. My boss has kids herself, but I'm just not sure how she will react to two days off in a row. But I guess I sort of feel like- what can I do? If they are sick, they are sick. I don't know why I am always do afraid to call out sick. Anyone else have this problem?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am going to text her to Just to give her a heads up. He was just sick again. I hope by the time he wakes up he is better. Nothing worse than not being able to make your child feel better at 2 am :(. I hate cold/flu season!!!!!!

I am very conscious of my time off and how it affects others, however, your boss should understand and appreciate your needing to take the appropriate time off to rid your family of the bug.

I like to open windows and air out the house. Clean all the commonly touched surfaces with some sort of disinfectant.

I got strep about 3 weeks after I started my current job. I took two days off of work and I NEVER take work off for me, unless it's a true vacation. I went in to work on Wednesday and they sent me home - I guess I still looked bad even though I felt a million times better.

If your boss doesn't understand, I'd want a new job.

if it is only two days i say absolutely not a problem - if you can get all of you well by then awesome! bosses understand. it sounds like you are very conscientious about your attendance so i'm sure you'll be fine - they know that you're not one to blow off work. hope everyone feels better soon!

I'm sure they'd rather have you out multiple days than have you getting the rest of the small office sick! Just call & be up front. Ask if there's any work you can swing by & pick up to work on at home.

I agree with Rachel - if your boss doesn't understand - you need a new job.

Unfortunately, getting sick happens in life.

If I'm not sick anymore - i would be taking my Playtex gloves, bucket of hot water with bleach and wiping down EVERY surface so that it can't spread again!!

I'm sorry about the inside of the car. That happened last year in my van. Pine-Sol and A LOT of scrubbing were my friends. Thank God it happened in the Spring - so I could leave the car open to air out as well. YUCK!!

Yes, people in my office are out for a day or two all the time. If you're not sick tomorrow though and are taking care of your kids, use a vacation day instead. I only use "sick" days when I am actually sick - if I'm taking care of sick kids, I use my other forms of paid time off. It probably doesn't make a difference and no one would know whether or not I was actually sick, but it's more of an honesty/karma thing.

my company is ok with several days off in a row. If you have the paid time off to do it then I say go for it. The diarrhea virus is running through my company and people have been out 3 days with it. Believe me, nobody wants that stuff so if you can keep it at home, then please do. If you are sick then the rules should be puke or pooh free for 24 hours before you step back into work.

Well, when you are sick and call in sick, that's one thing. But you probably shouldn't call in sick if your kids are sick. If childcare is an issue you should take a personal day sometimes those are unpaid or whatever. I'd address this with her also as to how she might prefer to handle it.

I would call and talk to the boss. If she has kids she should understand. But also point out to her that if you stay home another day or two there is less of a chance that you will spread your bug at the office. Even though you may miss 2 days that is better than everyone missing 1-2 days. Offer to eat lunch at your desk and work an extra hour a day until you are caught up.

I hope everyone is better soon. I think we had that same bug during the holidays--it swept through my family like a wildfire. It was not fun.
