Caldacott and Newberry Award Books

My son is 11 years old and needs to read a Caldacott or Newberry Award Book for his summer reading project for school. He does not want to read one more sad book about a dead dog or abused dog. He attends a Christian school and we do not read books about Witchs, Spirits anything like that.(he really does not even like them)
My problem is I can not find a book he likes, if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

I thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

What can I do next?

I loved the book "My Side of the Mountain" when I was a kid. loved it so much I bought it for my niece last year, she's 10, even though I think it's more of a boy's book. I believe it won one of those awards, but ask at border's to be certain.

It's about a younger boy that decides he wants to show he can do things on his own.

Good Luck

A good one is Maniac Magee. It deals with prejudice (I read it with my 6th graders every year and they really enjoy it.)

Holes is also another good book that most of my male students seem to really enjoy.

Another I read with my students is the Westing Game. It is also a great mystery story.

Hopefully that helps. Best of luck.

There are SO MANY really good Newberry Award books! My top suggestions for an 11 year old boy would be:

*Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli - I LOVE this book! It has a really positive message that is told is a fun, easy way. It would also be pretty easy reading for an 11 year old.

*The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin - This is a book I use in my math class when I teach reasoning skills! It is a kind of a mystery book that has so much fun stuff to figure out!

*Holes by Louis Sachar - Made famous by the movie, but of course the book is better!

*The Giver by Lois Lowry - This is in the fantasy/sci. fi kind of genre. Normally I don't enjoy this kind of book, but The Giver is an exception for me! I don't know anyone who didn't enjoy this book.

*Criss Cross by Lynne Rae Perkins - I am currently reading this one. So far, so good!

Good luck! Please let us know what he ends up reading and how he likes it! God Bless!

My son, 12, said that "The Giver" was really good. It looks like everyone agrees! I hope he enjoys whatever book he decides on.

Go to barnes and nobles or borders. great children sections and wonderful staff..

My husband (who hates reading books)and had to read for his Children's Lit class in college and I LOVED Sharon Creech's "Walk Two Moons", a Newbery Medal Winner. As with the other response, we also really liked "The Giver". Enjoy!

Has he read King Of The Wind? I loved that book as a kid and it's a Newberry award book
