My fifth grader loves to read and she is on a sixth grade reading level. She looked at the responses that I got from my other two questions but didn't like any of them. She is rather picky. She has asked her teacher multiple times about books and the last book she recommended she had read in first grade so we are all out of books right about now. I f you have any suggestions for my picky fifth grader please leave a response. Thanks so much, hopefully we'll find one.

Take her to a book store/library and have her pick something out by her self. The people who work at both these places are very helpful and can direct her toward something she is interested in.

Also the Warrior Series
Watership Down
Catherine Called Birdy
Dear America Series
Betsy Tacy Tibb books
THe Lightening Thief and other Percy Jackson books
Anne McCaffrey books
Julie of the Wolves and others
Katherine Petterson books, I love these and have been getting them at the library
WinnDixie
Any of the Newberry Award books
Night by Ellie Wiesel. I think
Harry Potter
Hatchet
My Side of the Mountain
The Blue Dophin
Crispin and other Avi books
Judy Blume
Narnia, et al.
Tolien
The Bronze Bow
Tirzah

Start taking her to the library and let her pick some young adult fiction.
One of my kid's favorite things to do is go to the mall and hang out at Barnes and Noble. We go almost weekly, you dont' have to buy but you sure can sample a lot of titles before you do. Also BandN has more books than the library.

Hi C.
I had children who loved to read too.
They read what they liked not what I liked.
We would go to the local library and they would say they had read all the books their, now from my point of view no one could, but they had. What fun they had as I brought them to another bigger library, and they got a library card for it. It takes time to look through the books, but let her choose maybe while you decide on a few for yourself. One of our sons in High School had a library card to one of the college libraries. Today he is a lawyer,
Much depends upon what they are reading. Much depends upon how they can expand their interests, or if you are simply talking of fiction. Only one of my four liked fiction. One found she loved magazine articles when the summer reading contest at the library was to critique those articles. She read lots of magazines(all kinds & for different ages) that summer. The added benefit was she learned to write through practice.
Hope it helps
God bless you as you work to solve the situation.

Here are some books/authors that my fourth grade classes have enjoyed:

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket (I LOVE them, too, and there are 13 books in the series to keep her going)

The City of Ember by Jeanne Duprau (a four-book series...AMAZING reads)

The White Giraffe
Number the Stars
Anything by Andrew Clements (Frindle is a personal favorite)
Loser by Jerry Spinelli (he's a great author with lots to pick from)
James and the Giant Peach (and anything else by Roald Dahl)
The Lightning Thief

I hope she finds something she likes! My favorite on the list is the City of Ember. You'd enjoy it, too!

My daughter has been an advanced reader since Kindergarten. She is now in 7th grade and always has her nose in a book =-) About a year or so ago she really got into non-fiction books. When we go to the library she usually checks out more non-fiction than fiction.

However, a series she recently got into is the 39 Clues series but she read all the books within a couple of weeks. Now we're awaiting the next book to be released!

What types of books does your daughter like? Have her check out some non-fiction books. My daughter at her age was mostly into books about animals, especially facts about ocean creatures. Oh and books of poems. The non-fiction books she is reading now are about Castles and how our 50 States got their names. She is totally fascinated by this stuff! Maybe your daughter would like stuff like that too?

I was the same way at her age. What is she into? What are her likes and dislikes? When I was her age I read Beverly Clearly, Judy Blume, and Madeleine L'Engle. I also loved horses therefore I would read everything about horses such as flicka, black stallion, and the red stallion. I also enjoyed books such "Where the red fern grew," "The Black Stallion and the girl," and "Half Magic."

My fifth grader is enjoying Carl Hiassen's books (Hoot, Scat, etc) Also Gary Paulsen - Hatchet, Tracker. Also have you asked the librarian at your local library? Have you asked any sixth grade teachers at school for recommendations?
Good luck finding something that she enjoys and that challenges her.

I have worked for years at the Magic Tree Bookstore in Oak Park, IL. We are a privately owned and run bookstore for children and teens. I also have a 10 year old son who currently reads at a high school level. I've worked with hundreds of kids - ones who love to read, who hated it, who just weren't good at it, who were gifted, etc.

I believe that the key is always that the child must learn to LOVE to read. It sounds like your daughter has that down. The second thing is this: What does she like? What are her interests? Does she want to read only a certain 'type' of book, or will she read a lot of different things?

I often find kids who think the regular school recommended lists are stale and boring- or that they have already READ them all, lol! Here are some general favorite books and authors I recommend you and your daughter check out!

1)The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley

2) The Wolves of Willowboughy Chase by Joan Aikin

3)The Genie of Sutton Place by Georges Selden

4)Chasing Vermeer by Blue Balliet

5)The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart

6)Pirates! by Cecilia R.

7)Airhead by Meg Cabot

8)The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin

9) Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C Wrede

These are just a few- but some may be things that interest her and some may not! Ask your librarian to help figure out what she likes and doesn't like. Finding things similar to books she already loves, while encouraging her to branch out with more interests is a librarian's job and most of them love to do it and are very good at it as well!

I didn't see the responses, but did she try asking her school librarian? Also, the public library and librarian can be a great resource--they even publish lists by age.

I teach fifth grade. There are so many great books out there. I have girls in my class who love Sharon Creech books like Walk Two Moons and Bloomability (one of my favorites). Does she like historical fiction? I'm currently doing a unit of study on the westward expansion and the kids are role playing traveling west in a wagon train. There are some good Dear America books that connect. Find out what she's studying in Social Studies and ask the librarian if she can recommend a book at that time period.
