I need help! I have been having a terrible time with allergies for about the last month-- sinus pressure, sneezing, congestion, coughing, and itchy eyes. I'm feeling pretty miserable and the cough is making me lose my voice which is rough when you have 2 little ones who are into everything! I'm breastfeeding my 9 month old so I was hoping to get some ideas what is safe to take that won't pass in my milk and harm my son or dry up my supply. I was told that Claritin is safe but it hasn't been helping much. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have!

So What Happened?

I have been using a neti pot every night and it has helped tremendously. I still have days that are worse then others but at least it's manageable with the neti and Clatitin. Thanks for the suggestions.

I would go to Sprouts or Wholefoods and ask them there. I know that alfalfa can really help. You can also go to www.kellymom.com for some great recommendations.

I have been using a neti pot. It is a little tea pot looking thing. It is used to rinse out the nasal passages. I first heard about it through Oprah. It has worked well for me. I am also a breast feeding mom who has had a couple of colds. All it is is water and a salt solution that runs through your nose. The first time I tried it, it was both pretty amazing and gross all the stuff I got out of my nose. The best part was that I could breathe again. You can find it at Walmart near the saline nose sprays. Hope this helps.

I am all for the natural approch but nothing was working for me. I am still nursing my 11 month old and went to the allergist and he has me on sigular in the evening and clariton in the am then eye drops when they are bad and nasonex if that all isn't cutting it. I really only have to take the singular and clariton right now and that seems to be helping alot. I also had the allergy testing done and it turns out I am pretty much allergice to everything in AZ so I started the allergy shots so I can cut back on the allergy medications. Good luck I understand how hard it is. I am much more alert with my kids now and am feeling much better.

Hi V.,

Have you tried nettles? It can be very helpful with allergies, and it actually helps your milk supply - some herbalists prescribe it to help with nursing. It's the kind of thin g that isn't an instant fix, so you have to give it a little time before you see much improvement - at least that's been my experience. You can find it at Wild Oats or Warehouse Vitamins.

Good luck - I know how miserable allergies can be!
