Breast CA Radiation- Seeds or Traditional?

It depends on your moms resilience and chances of infection

if she's a softy and easily gets sick
go with the seeds

if shes a tough old bird, and has daily family support
where each of you takes turns nursing her
go with traditional

( Just my opinion)

This article is long but well worth it.
I also know frankincense, sandalwoood, lemon and other oils are powerful against cancer and tumors.

There are other options other than radiation. If I were you I wouldn't do anything new...

Hi Nicole,
I had traditional with a booster 5 years ago and am considered a survivor today. The only negative is that the breast is horribly deformed. Radiologists today have a hard time reading the scar tissue under the surface. However, reconstruction is supposedly free, if your M. chooses that route (my feeling is that any time I am in a hospital and go under anesthetic I am at risk). I would definitely get second opinions before going with anything new. I wish your M. the best.

I don't have much information on this myself, since I was stage I with mastectomy/chemo and radiation was not needed. Her radiation oncologist should be able to explain the differences, and you may be able to get information from the American Cancer Society, the Susan G. Komen Foundation - my main source of online information was the Young Survival Coalition, having been diagnosed at 35, but even though your M. is not a young breast cancer patient, there still may be info on the radiation options on the site www.youngsurvival.org

tell her to get at least 2 opinions on the subject. I go to a Dr. Marc Greenberg - Breast Doctor in NYC... uptown.. he is excellent.. you can Sloan for a number. See if he can answer what he feels is best.. because he is suppose to be a top dr. in his field.. good luck..

The seeds - is that where they implant the radiation? The only thing I've really heard about the implanted radiation is that the person should NOT (my first unedited response did not include this 'not' and didn't make sense - sorry!!) be in contact with children b/c they are emitting radiation. I REALLY don't know if I'm correct about that so absolutely check and let me know if I am wrong.

Hi Nicole....I am a breast cancer "survivor" and I went through the chemo and radiation. Every day for six weeks and having gone through it, the old way is the best way. These new things to me are still experimental and I wouldn't want to take any chances of it not responding well to my treatment. Best of luck to your M., and just keep hugging her every day, lots of hugs is the best medicine for it.

I had stage I and finished traditional route in January after chemo. I got an opinion from Memorial Sloan Kettering and a highly regarded oncology doctor in northern NJ. Neither of them even offered to do the seeds. I have heard of it. A friends mother used them and seem not to have had as easy a time as I did. Infection and lots of swelling I think since there is a tube that stays open where they insert the seeds. In the end I think she worked it all out, but I do think she radiated during the treatment and had to stay away from kids/others. I definitely don't think the new seeds are a significant advantage or standard of care would have converted to them. Just do your homework. Hang in there, all of you!
