Brazilian Blowout - Is It Safe Now??

I hear that Brazilian Blowout treatments are safe now as they have stopped using formaldehyde. Is this true??

I would really love to get a hair smoothing/straightening treatment. My hair in thin and frizzy and I am tired of using the hair iron every day. So I am really thinking of getting this done. Please let M. know if you got it done and also if there are any other side affects like too much loss of hair etc.

I am looking for other good options too like Japanese hair straightening. But I hear it needs to be done by a very experienced stylist and I am worried to try it with someone without recommendations. Also I have color treated my hair couple times, so I might not be a good candidate for that.

Please let M. know if the new formaldehyde free Brazilian blowouts are safe now in all aspects. I would love to have lovely frizz-free hair and want it without any additional health risks if possible. Do let M. know your experiences, it would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Well, they are safe, but they don't last long at all. It's a lot of money for not a lot of return, in my opinion.

Instead, ask about a keratin treatment that lasts between 4 and 5 months. That's a lot less product on your hair than Brazailian blowouts as often as you'd have to get them. The keratin treatment is more expensive than the Brazilian blowout, but lasts a lot longer and is a lot more cost effective. You also have to use a specific shampoo and conditioner, just to let you know. Try an Ulta with a salon if you have one in your vicinity. They train their stylists to use the product. The more experienced the stylist, the higher the price, but it's worth it. (Like the lead stylist.) Ulta is good, and less expensive than a high end salon.

The thing though that I want to mention is that when you have thin hair, it being straight accentuates that you have thin hair. Maybe that's better than frizzy hair to you though...

Oh, and it's fine to color and do keratin treatments. You just have to wait two weeks between each one.

I am not familiar with the Brazilian Blowout or any conflict with it.

That said, I have long straight as a board hair, think Pocahontas because of my Native American Heritage. I never use a straightening iron.

I sometimes model for my hair stylist and a couple of years ago she did a CHI Enviro Smoothing treatment on M.. This is supposedly similar to a Brazilian. The costs depends on your hair type and how much time is involved. It took about an hour and a half to complete, you can't wash your hair for a couple of days, you can still get hair color, etc with the treatment and you use the special CHI wash, heat protectant and conditioner. It is supposed to last about 3 months if you do everything by the book. I got a good 4-5 months with it. I loved it... my hair was so soft and shiny. I still use some of the CHI products because I love them.

I would expect to pay at least $200 not including tip for this treatment if I were a paying customer.

according to my hairstylist, NO, they are not safe... she actually got so fed up with the BB and the supposed ffBB that she left her long time salon and opened her own salon to be 100% free and clear of the fumes and such associated with it.

I have done the Brazilian Blowouts and Keratin Straightening processes, as well as many other straightening processes. I have difficult, very coarse, extremely curly hair.

Last year, for about a year, I had the Keratin process done. I needed to have it done about every 3 months. It was alright, but it didn't get my hair as smooth as I wanted. Nothing gets it really smooth.

Before that I had been having the Brazilian Blowout done despite the negative press. I was happy with it, but switched to the Keratin process because it was said to be better.

Now I'm back to the Brazilian Blowout. It is said to be safer now, and I like it better. It gets my hair smoother, although I still have to work to get it as smooth and straight as I like it. I have it done every 11 weeks.

I spend a fortune on my hair, but I always have. That is my one big expense. Let M. know if you have more questions.
