Bottles in the Dishwasher

We are expecting baby #2, giong with a scheduled cesarean this coming Thursday - can't wait! ;) Anyways, with my son we did not have a dishwasher so we washed everything by hand. However, we moved and now have a dishwasher (LOVE IT!). I am planning to nurse and hoping I can make it work this time (difficulties with my son had me supplementing and pumping for three months and then switched over to all formula). Is it safe to wash the Medela bottles in the dishwasher and does that also sterilize them? What about pacifiers? Is it better to wash everything by hand and use a microwave sterilizer? Also, how long does it remain sterile...is it too soon for me to get everything washed up and sterilized now? Most of what we have will be left from my son, but we also got a new Medela gift set with some new bottles and storage containers as well. I think that's all, thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I got one of those 'baskets' for the dishwasher (they're like $3 or $4 from Target) for all the nipples and rings and things for the bottles, and yes, I put EVERYTHING in the dishwasher!! Of course it cleans and sterilizes, would you eat off the plates you put in the dishwasher if they weren't coming out clean?

Gone are the days of boiling bottles and using bottle sterilizers (the latter being a complete joke and marketing scam to begin with). Out of 3 kids, NONE of them had any issues with me putting bottles in the dishwasher. In fact, it's been proven that there are more instances of thrush from poorly hand washed bottles. My kids never had thrush or anything else due to the way I washed the bottles... in the dishwasher ;)

You're going to want to trash any old nipples though, because they can dry rot and break apart in babies mouth. Buy all new nipples.

Bottles in the dishwasher - YES, they to get sterilized from the heat.

I did notice that putting nipples in the dishwasher tends to wear down the rubber/plastic, so just check them regularly. Also, water can get trapped in the pacifers, but that's also true if you boil them.

I have always just run bottles through the dishwasher, unless I needed one right away and they were all dirty, then I hand wash.
I have never sterilized bottles aside from the dishwasher, never had any problems.

I sterilized everything once and then it all went into the top rack of the dishwasher after that, even my Medela bottles. If you have Medela pump, I didn't put the tubing, valves, and stuff in the dishwasher. I used a microwave sterilizing bag for that stuff.

We have an 8 week old; with our 5 yr old twins we didn't have a dishwasher either, so life is easy with a dishwasher! We do not do extra sterilizing after the bottles and binkies are run through the dishwasher. However - we have found that the bottles fill up the washer faster than the rest of the dishes, so about once a week, we hand wash bottles and sterilize on the stove in a pot of water. Saves a dishwasher run.... Good luck!!!

I have never, in my life time, sterilized a bottle or any other thing that goes in a child's mouth. Dishwashers that heat will sanitize the items inside.

I put everything in the dishwasher except those Medela membraines (those little round white things that enable the suction). Definitely get one of those little baskets. I know Munchkin makes them, and I know Walmart and Target sell them. You might want to get two, because it was very handy to have one to take with us to visit grandparents. Otherwise we were usually handwashing them there.

Definitely buy new nipples. I also bought new membraines. Not sure I needed to, but they're pretty cheep and it made me feel better.

No reason not to put them all in the dishwasher right now. I gave my kids their first bottle when they were just a couple of days old. They never had nipple confusion, and it made my life easier knowing they could take a bottle when I needed them to.
