Bottle Warmer That Won't Boil the Milk

I am looking for a recommendation for a good bottle warmer. My only experience was three years ago, I got it as a baby gift and the one time I tried it, it boiled the breast milk. We have always just used hot tap water with great success, but we will be taking a 17 hour road trip for Christmas. We don't want to have to stop and nurse every three hours, so we were going to give her a bottle instead. I need something to warm the breast milk in the car. We have purchased an outlet adapter for the car, so we can use one with a regular plug or a travel version. Any recommendations or suggestions would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I have personally tried two different "bottle" warmers for the car and did not like either. They took atleast 20-30 minutes to warm up. Yes it is so much easier to take frozen or chilled breastmilk and bottle feed in the car, so I finally learned. I got one of those travel coffee mugs that plugs into the adapter to keep warm and it works AWESOME. It takes just as much time to warm a bottle in one of those as it would at home. Those are easiest to find around this time of year too, so good luck and hope this helps.

What you may want to consider is the thermoelectric travel refrigerators that they have now. You can set them to be a cooler or a warmer. While travelling, you could set it to "warm" and about 15/20 minutes before you need the breastmilk, you could put it in the warmer to warm up.

First of all good luck on the road trip! I have a child who hates to ride in the car. Anyway, I don't know of a warmer, however, what I found that worked good on my long car rides with a bottle, is stop a gas station or fast food place and ask for a glass of HOT water. Let it sit in it for a few minutes and then give to your child. I use to live in San Antonio and come to visit my parents in dallas area, before moving up. That's what I would do. My son was only breastfeed too, and he still hated taking the bottle from me, most of the time I would have to stop and feed him. Like I said, he hated car rides so it was awful to drive that long, what should have taken 5 hour trip, always took 7+ with him.
Have Happy Holidays!

If you want one that plugs in to a regular outlet, I used the Avent bottle warmer with my oldest and it worked really well. It seemed to always get just the right temperature, and had an auto shut-off when it was done. Usually only took 2-3 minutes. (My oldest never really cared if it was cold or warm, but when I was trying to speed-defrost for a bottle and it was still really cold, we liked to get it at least room temp for him.) For my second son, we bought a different one because it was cheaper, and I really didn't like it that much, too hard to get the temp right, either too cold or way too hot and had to let it cool again (he never really took a bottle, so it wasn't much of an issue). Point is, the Avent warmer is pricier, but I found it to be worth it.

I believe you are not supposed to use bottle warmer to heat up breast milk because iy gets the milk too hot and destroys the good componments in breast milk. Suggestion would be to bring a thermos with warm water and use that to warm the breast milk. Also, nursing when you stop to take a bathroom or food break.

Something you can do before you go is see if your daughter cares if it's warm or cold. People used to think that cold milk bothered babies tummies, but I was told it's more of a preference thing. Some babies like it warm, some don't care. Mine didn't care.

At the same time, though, it might not be a bad idea to stop and nurse every 3 hours cause someone's going to need to pee and/or stretch :)

Have a good trip!

I nurse while my husband drives. I just lean up to my baby. Its not the most comfortable position but it works well enough to get my baby satisfied or asleep.

Hi Stacey,
My friend would always take a thermos with hot water and when it was time to feed the baby, she dunked the bottle in the thermos for a little bit and it warmed up the bottle perfectly each time. Hope that helps.
