Books About the Dentist

I took my daughter with me when she was an infant and up. I took her to regular appts for cleanings. Around age 1 my dentist started " checking" daughters mouth to ease her into it.

At age 2 I did go to pedi dentist ( no slides but kid friendly activities) and we never had an issue. Daughter is 19 now, never a cavity or need for ortho, just wisdom teeth extraction last June.

She now goes to our regular dentist.

Don't make a big deal of it and children won't make a big deal of it .

The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist

Don't make it a big deal and it will be fine. there is probably a beranstain bears book about the dentist. the first trip to the dentist all he will do is "count" your little ones teeth and have him swish some water around in his mouth. and maybe show him the brush they use for cleanings. they don't do any digging around in toddlers mouths so no pain. I don't have any book suggestions but just wanted to say that all three of my kiddos love going to the dentist! We've pumped it up big time for them about how cool it is & how much better their teeth feel & yada yada yada. We've always gone to a family dentist not pediatric so no tvs & such for us either. They get to wear sunglasses in the chair so the light doesn't hurt their eyes & they get to pick out 1 toy from the dentist's treasure chest when they are done. My 8 year old has even had to have an abscessed tooth pulled (major painful) & still loves going.
The only advice I'll share came from one of the hygienists at our last office; she would always tell parents to NOT let their kiddos watch Finding Nemo within a week or two of going in. Apparently they saw some kids freaked out due to the latter scenes in the movie.

Dora and the Berenstain Bears books, have a "dentist" book. Just google it. I had that when my kids were younger.
Maybe even Blue's Clues has one too. Or books for that age group.

Just Google Search "Dora books about the dentist." Or "Berenstain Bear books about the Dentist." Or "Blue's Clues books about the Dentist" etc.

Your dentist doesn't need to be a "special" pediatric dentist. Ours isn't. And our kids have never had a problem going (starting also around age 3) and our youngest actually looked forward to getting to go. They are 15 and 12 and still don't mind. Our dentist has a good chair-side manner and is professional, competent, and funny! And he's a dad. So he gets kids...

I never made it into a big deal for them. Just something we do twice a year to make sure we are taking good care of our teeth. Like you go change the oil in the car, or whatever. No drama required.
We are a pretty low-key, non-drama kind of family. So that was pretty easy.

I also read them The Berenstein Bears book about going to the dentist. Not as a "prep" book, but just one of many BB books (and other books) that we read as bedtime stories. I'd pick a new book every few weeks at the book store (or several) and they would help choose them also... and then at bedtime, they'd get to choose what book to have read to them. Sometimes I chose one and they chose one, etc.
They liked the story. How much it affected their early dental experiences, I can't really say... but we never had any issues. Still don't, and I have one almost out of braces, and one that has had to have several teeth pulled (for orthodontal reasons), and they still have no problems with the dentist.
