Blood in Newborn Stool

Is this the first time? is the stool other wise normal, does she has the blood again ? many things to observe if its only one time indecent then i wont worry much but will tell the pediatrician if its going on then i will rush to one, usually its an allergy to milk product.

There is one more thing that has not been mentioned yet, it COULD be blood from your nipples if you are breastfeeding.

This is not normal, they always say to take the child in if there is blood in the stool. I would keep calling back to the ped and make sure that they get back to you today. It may be nothing to worry about, but better to be safe.

Might be a food allergy... Usual cause is cow's milk protein and/or soy protein.

You did the right thing by calling the doctor. If it is bright red and not black, that is actually better, but they will probably see you right away to be sure. Black, tar like, or things resembling coffee grounds are the kind of blood that will cause the greatest concern.

She is probably fine, see your doctor and keep calling when you have questions. That is why they are there. Get a nap with your darling if you can while you wait.

Sometimes newborn girls bleed vaginally for a short period because of all the hormones in their system from you, they can also get swollen breasts (even the boys, my boy did during early breast feeding) from the excess female hormones. Take her in to make sure though.

NO!!!! my daughter at almost 3 weeks had the same thing, first at the hospital they gave her ENFAMIL the most common one, then they told me her stool was too watery, then the nurse changed it to PROSOBEE, which later at home got her very constipated and she had blood on her stool. it saddened me i thought it was something that ript inside while she was pushing, but they told me she had a cow's milk protein allergy, so they told me not to feed her prosobee, they change her formula to NUTRAMIGEN!! she does very well with that formula.

NOW IF YOU DONT GET A RESPONSE BACK FROM THE PEDIATRICIAN, I SUGGEST YOU TAKE HER TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM, I DID!!!

My son had bloody stools and mucusy stools at 12 weeks. It was a milk allergy. I was breastfeeding but I had to stop eating dairy because it was going through my milk and causing him trouble. Of course, this is definately worth asking your doctor about. Good luck!

I've heard of newborn girls (like less than 1 week) having a bloody discharge sometimes (due to maternal hormones leaving the body), but never in one 6 weeks old.
Glad you called the ped. Does she have anything else strange going on? Is she eating, sleeping okay?
