With out making a long story. My son at birth had a blocked tear duct, it eventually cleared on its own. My daughter also has a blocked tear duct that has not cleared up as of yet. If anyone has experienced this with their children, I'd love to hear any info about blocked tear ducts that you could share with me. Thanks

What can I do next?

My daughter had what we were told was a blocked duct soon after she was born, and it wouldn't go away with all the warm compresses and cleanings in the world. We eventually got an antibiotic ointment that we put on her eye 3x/day and it was cleared up in 3 days! Hope it's this easy solution for you!

My daughter also had a blocked tear duct at birth. The doctor told me to put breast milk on it several times a day as that has healing properties. That didn't seem to help and her eye would get so mucosy and crusty that it would seal shut. I would just take a warm cloth and wipe it off a couple times a day. Finally on one of her checkups...I think 2 weeks, the Dr. gave me some drops. It was a challenge to get the drops in her eyes since they weren't open very much, and she would scream like it hurt her but we kept using them. I have to say I didn't use them as much as I was supposed to (4 times a day, 2 drops). It would clear up for a few days and then I would stop using it. Then it would come back. I think I went through it a few times of this cycle. Finally it just cleared up. But I don't think it would have cleared up without the drops. Maybe you should ask your Dr. about it. Good luck!

Hello K., My daughter, who is now 14 years old, was also born with a blocked tear duct. It did not work itself out and the pediatrician recommended a local opthamologist. I got a seconded opinion from Dr. Terri Young at Childrens Hosp. in Boston. She recommended the surgery be done by 12 months old for the best results. Because we had watched it for so long with the pediatrician, my daughter was actually 14 months when it was done. It was a simple day surgery that took 20 minutes and she has been fine ever since. I highly recommend the doctor and the hospital. Good Luck

My little girl has a blocked tear duct, also. Her doctor kept telling me that it should clear up by the time she turns 1. Her last doctor's appointment I asked him what I could do to get rid of it, cuz "massaging" a busy baby's eye a bunch of times a day is easier said than done. He told me that I could have a simple surgery done where they go in and open it up, but he said that if it was his daughter, he'd let it clear up on it's own. Well, she's almost 13 months now and its still there. I just hate going out and and people keep asking me what is wrong with her eye...and it looks like I don't ever clean it out but I do, and as soon as I turn around its back again! It makes her eye water all the time, too. Next month i'm taking her in to get more info about the surgery to correct it.

If you happen to be nursing your baby you can put a couple drops of breast milk in her eye. It has natural antibiotics in it, this worked great for my son who also had this problem.

Hi, my son had a blocked duct and the pedi told me to just keep massaging the inner corner of the eye very gently with my pinkie finger. We did this every fewer hours for a couple days and it worked. Good luck!!!

Hi K., my first son cameron...now passed on. he had numerous medical conditions.... but after his 2nd birthday he began having a red, yucky eye(left one). i noticed this while out of town for about a month. becuase of his severeities we couldnt just take him any place...as they would look over the small stuff & focus on the bigger problems...long long story. anyhow after about a yr of diffrent eye meds & special washes....someone said to me use very warm, or as hot as he can tolerate...wash cloth. run it under hot/warm water. drain excess water & do hot compresses 3 times a day. also several times a day we had to clean all the sleepy's out of his eyes which was the culprit of the problem...it seemed to have improved greatly just before he passed last july(he was 3 yrs & 3 mos) so he delt with the clogged tear duct for well over a year. i would try it. also just go & see an opthmologists rather than a pediatrician...as an eye doctor obviously specializes in the eyes. i know in concord...concord eye care is awesome. we saw dr. christine morses. she is so wonderful. shes a pedi eye doc. good luck. C.
