Birthday Gift Help

My son is having a birthday party for his 10th b-day. He is inviting 15 (!) boys, which is all the boys from his class. However, he does not want gifts for himself. He saw where some kids now donate their presents instead of keeping them. What he wants to do is have his friends bring game and book donations for the children's ward at St. John's where he was a patient last year. He wants to give back, and he says he does not need any more toys. (St. John's has already been contacted regarding a donation and told us waht they need.) My questions are: Has anyone else done this? How do you word this in the invitations? I am really proud of him for this, as this is not his usual "selfish" persona. Thanks in advance for all your help!

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded and gave me great ideas on how to word the invites for my son's b-day party. The parents were very responsive and excited about gifts for the children's ward at St. John's, and the boys who came were equally excited! They put a lot of thought into the gifts to make sure that the games they brought could be enjoyed by a child that was bedridden. There were videos and even money and gift cards so that my son could pick stuff out himself to take to St. John's. He was sooooo thrilled! We took a group picture to give to the hospital so that they knew who these great kids were. We are now trying to arrange a day to take the gifts to St. John's for the sick children to enjoy. Thank you again so very much in giving me such great suggestions!

For my daughter's First Communion, we included the following on the invitation:

In lieu of presents, Xxxx would like to receive monetary gifts which she plans to donate to Give Kids the World and to purchase her first shares of Disney stock.

It took me quite a while to come up with this wording, specifically because we were asking for money. Surprisingly, it worked very well! Everyone thought it was a wonderful gesture.

We have neighbors who adopted two children from Russia. Every year for their birthday, they ask for presents for Operation Shoe Box. They include a flyer/letter about the organization and how to make the shoe box. Works like a charm! Good luck with your little boy's party; I think you are a saint for just having a party with 15 10yr old boy - even before the donated present issue is included!

D.,

Amazing!! My heart swells just knowing that there are children out there like your son! If you could make the invitations, you could design them to look like an advertisement, magazine cover, a library card, or something creative, and like the other posters said, just type what you want. I would try to be as specific as possible so that the parents are not left wandering what it is they are supposed to bring. I think that your son will have a great time opening these presents for the other kids. You may want to request that they send them wrapped so that he can unwrap them at the party, just as he would his own presents. Half the fun in getting presents is unwrapping them!

What a wonderful, compassionate, giving son you have! I would word it on the invitations just like he said, that he doesn't want any gifts for himself, but would rather accept donations of games and books for the children's ward at St. Johns hospital. You should feel blessed by having such a caring son. Good luck to you and your family!
