Hello mamas- Okay any ideas for a 30th birthday gift for my dear friend. She loves kooky things, wine, having parties, has unusual hobbies but does not like any knick knacks, frames in the house. Any ideas? I asked my husband and he said "I'd just call her." Ha I should have known better than to ask him. Thank goodness for this site!

Seghesio Family Vineyards has Tasting Flight Kits. Really cute and unique, could be a fun gift if she likes red wine.

Greetings MLB,
I have started giving gifts that can be useful with an emergancy. Like leather gloves to pick up glass after an earthquake, flashlight and batteries, wind up raido that can even charge a cell phone, first aid kit, supplies that can go in a car that can be stored in a box or backpack. I have found that with these items on hand it has helped with many emergancies and made us all better prepared.
Good Luck,

How about taking her to lunch at a favorite restaurant, or a gift card to a favorite store.

First of all, from your previous response I have to say I really like the idea of the photo book. Other than that, when I am really stumped I resort to gift cards, especially if you live far from her, which might be the case since you were told to call her. Maybe tickets to a show and gift card to a restaurant. If you live close enough, I would do a friends' night/day out. Book a day at the spa together for massages or a facial. Or if funds are shorter, do a pedicure/manicure date. You can add lunch and a movie and make it a day out. Or you can go out to dinner or drinks and appetizers and bring her flowers, also add a show or movie to it if you can. For me, I feel the best gift I could receive would be to spend time with my friends. Now that we're all busy moms, it gets harder and harder to do. A relaxing time out would be my choice.

Hi. I got this idea from a 4 year old, but I still think it's cool and might do it for my best friend for her birthday (29) this year.

These two little girls have been friends since birth and their families vacation together so they've been through many adventures together. The parents used a photosite (shutterfly I think, but they all have it) to make a book of their friendship. They just used the paperback mini-book and it was SO cool.

If you've been friends for several years this could be really fun.

Other than that, and depending on how much you wanted to spend, you might take her for a girls trip to Napa, or, if she has kids, give her a "coupon" for a day off where you pick her kids up in the morning and don't return them until after dinner and a gift certificate to do something for herself like a pedicure.

Hope this helps.

Since your friend likes wine and having parties, you could buy or make her some wine glass jewelry. These are little ornaments which attach around the stem of wine glasses to identify one person's glass from others'. Even if she already has some of these, since she likes having parties, receiving more wouldn't hurt. And if you spend a little time making them yourself, you're certain to be avoiding duplicate designs.

Here in Sacramento, we have Music Circus and the Broadway Series which both bring amazing musicals and other theater performances to town all year long. I've only been a few times but I always think it's fun to get tix for a matinee show and lunch afterward or Friday evening tix and dinner/dessert. There is a fondue restaurant next our Music Circus that is a fun experience on it's own. Getting dressed up and going to the theater is always a nice treat. It seems so posh. And since I'm so close to the Bay here in Sacramento, if I found great hotel deals, I could kick it up a notch and take in a show in San Francisco.

Get a bunch of friends together and go wine tasting. You can do a wine tasting tour and have a nice dinner together. And, if she really likes a particular wine, chip in and give her a bottle (or two). I hope this helps!

Hi Mama-
It almost seemed like you were writing about me. I AM that woman, and I am turning 30. Scary!
Okay, so no dust collectors or knick knacks. We hate those things because they mean more cleaning and more breakable stuff in the house. 2 suggestions to start with: a really great bottle of wine. Go to one of those mom and pop liquor and deli shops, and spend about $30-$50 on a really nice bottle. DO NOT be afraid to ask your fellow shoppers for help. I am not necessarily a wine person, but my BFF is, and so when I shop for her, I always ask the people who are reading the vintage dates on the labels and purchasing cheese and crackers. The 2nd idea is a mani-pedi. Do something with her and pay for it. It's a usable gift and a fun girls day out. Spend the morning getting your toes and fingers all prettied up and then have lunch. It does not have to be expensive.
Last idea, get her a gift card to her all time favorite place to shop. I LOVE the Body Shop, but I cannot afford to go there regularly. So my sister in law sends me $20-$30 there for my day each year, and I love it. Then, when I visit her, I can show her what I purchased.
For me, as I assume it is the same for her that usable gifts are the best- except one CAN have too many lotions. If she likes art, find her favorite artist and get her a print- or a card of the print. But for me, the key is usability- A candle of my favorite fragrance that I will burn, or a lipgloss that I have been jonesing for.....
Hope this helps!
Good luck!

P.S. Sometimes, a dinner party out (everyone else can pick up their own meal and chip in for dinner) is really great, too.

How about giving her an experience for her birthday? Hot Air balloon ride, ride on the wine train, a day of sailing, or race car driving - these might be out of your price range, but you could find something cheaper. Some ideas might be a belly dancing lesson, a day at a museum, henna tattoos, even a scavenger hunt with clues made just for her could be wild and fun.

Good luck!

The best gift ever on my birthday? My two best friends each went to one of those make your own pottery places (We have Color Me Mine near us). They each made me really fun serving platters with colorful swirly designs, but easy to work with colors. On the back of each plate is a sweet note reminding me how important our friendships are to each other.

I've had them the serving platters for 7 years, and they are used at my parties all the time. I feel loved everytime I use them.

Thank goodness for girlfriends!
