Birthday Cake Replacement

Does anyone have suggestions on what to serve instead of cake for a first birthday? We have had issues in the past with her eating products containing rice flour and wheat flour. I would hate for her to have a reaction at her birthday party.

What can I do next?

Banana Pudding! :-) My grandmother made one for my first 4 birthdays! We are going to make one for my daughters 1st bday also. Good Luck!

Hey I saw this and thought I would let you in on the best thing. Icecream cakes are great just look at the ingredients or you can even do like I did and do a huge soft baked brownie decorated and it works great. My son had an allergic reaction when he was three to his birthday cake so I decided to get the stuff to make a brownie cake for my other son's second birthday and it was great. Betty Crocker is great. I hope this helps.

Hi - have you tried a flourless cake? They are delicious.

Try an Icecream Cake. It is made out of nothing but Icecream and icing.

Good luck!

Hi B.. I have had ice cream cakes and the "edible arrangements" made out of fruit. Both were big hits with the kids. Good luck!

We used to do big chocolate chip cookies. I'm not sure of the flour content. But at a lot of my local bakeries you can get a decorated cookie about the size of a large pizza.

Get some fruit and whip it up in some cool whip. You can even add sprinkles and it makes a wonderful mess but the mess is less if you freeze it.

There's no rule that says you have to have pastry of any kind just because it's a birthday party - and it's not like she's going to know that cake is "traditional."

Just serve an assortment of her favorite treats.

Make a cake shaped mold of Jello with diced fruits and a whipped cream topping. You can decorate the top with sprinkles and still use regular cake decorations and write a message with icing.

Here's a recipe for a Chocolate Birthday cake that uses Barley Flour instead of wheat.

1 cup barley flour
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
5 tablespoons canola oil
1/2 cup rice flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 cup cold water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine ingredients and blend very well. Put batter into a 9" pan (square or circle). Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. For a birthday cake, double the recipe (making two square or circle shapes) and put frosting inbetween and on top.
Above, left, the wacky cake recipe with frosting. This is a doubled recipe which makes a two-layer cake. (Bake in two separate cake pans.)

This is for people with wheat allergies or celiac disease.

Ice cream cakes are really awesome too, though.
