Just curious if anyone else out there has big babies. My baby turned 8 months today and weighs 28 pounds!

What can I do next?

My youngest son was 8.5 lbs , & at his 3yr well child was 42lbs. He doesn't look that big but anyone who tries to pick him up is shocked.

I've heard height really puts the weight on, so as long as the mother is not overweight, I'd say big is OK if the baby is tall, etc.

But if the baby is big because the mother is overweight, that's a bad cycle. I generally see these kids tend to be chubby as toddlers and preschoolers, and probably are set up for health problems for life.

Marie C - look at the Britax Frontier or the Graco Nautilus. They will keep your daughter in a 5 point harness and can convert to a booster later. My son is 6 years old, 48" and 52 lbs and he fits well in both seats.

Sorry to hijack the thread! C., my son was always 90-95% for height and weight when he was younger and probably started slowing down around age 4. My daughter is the opposite... she was 28 lbs at her 2.5 year old well check. :D

Yes, I had 2. My dd was born at 8 lbs 23" and my son was 10.2 lbs and 21", so I had big babies. Now, she is 3.5 and is 54 lbs and a size 6x. He is 27 months and is in a 4t and weighs 39 pounds. They just grow bigger faster and people think they are older than they are. I missed getting to let them wear cute baby clothes for the whole first year or two, but they are fun too. I know you are enjoying your little one too!

Oh, buy a good car seat that will grow with them because otherwise you will have to buy extras later. I went with the Diono/Sunshine kids because they will let the kids stay in a 5 point harness even when they are 3 and weigh too much or are too tall for a "regular" car seat that stops at 40 pounds.

That is a big baby! My DD was a chunky baby til she started to crawl, so he might change his body shape when he gets crawling or walking. Some kids are just big naturally. I have a friend whose older DD is tall and thin and her little sister (who takes after her biological father) is just a big girl. She's not quite 2 and looks 3, at least. Kids eat the same meals and have the same mother, who is of an average/healthy weight. Genetics.

My daughter was 10 1/2lbs at birth but now at 18m is only 25lbs. My son was only 5pounds at birth and now at 7 is 70lbs.

My dd was 9 lbs 12oz at birth. She never lost weight, just gained it. She was in the 98% for weight until her first birthday, along with 87% for height. Then she SHOT up, and is now (at 3yo) 38% weight, and 97% height. Tall and skinny. Lol. It sucks, because I have to find her a booster seat to ride in, now that she is at the absolute height limit for her convertible seat.

Both my kids were 90-99th percentile babies. It didn't really mean much of anything. The oldest is now in the 13th percentile for weight as a 10-year-old and 7-year-old is only in middle-range now. Wouldn't worry about the weight at all.

My older daughter was a bit lightweight but long at birth. She was quickly 95th percentile for h/w and stayed the way until puberty. At 3, she was wearing 5T. Now she is just above average height, but very slender. She's 20 and can actually still fit children's clothing.
My younger daughter weighed 7 oz less and was an inch shorter. She's never been more than 25th percentile for height, but after years of being underweight, she's now 25th for weight. At 7, she wears a size 5 or 6.

I didn't birth my son but he was 8 lbs 8 oz at birth. At 6 months he was 25 pounds. Today at 39, he is still big but not overweight and is 6 foot. During his childhood, he was chunky but active and played football and other sports. When he went into the Army, he was a string bean due to all the physical activity. His genetics make him a full bodied stocky kind of guy. I had to make his pants to fit his body as he was larger in the middle and all the store bought pants were about 10 inches too long.

My grandson took after him. However, grandson's mother is also full bodied and tall and so is her father (6'4'). So he is a bit bigger than dad but hopefully will trim down a bit in the next year or so.

As long as they are active and eat healthy there is not too much to worry about.

The title of this made me think it was going to be about husbands :)

That is a big baby - my son was 9lbs 12 oz at birth and 26lbs at 12 months, so you've got me beat.

How big was your baby at birth?

How long is your baby?

My daughter was 6 lbs 9 oz at birth and is slightly more petite than the average at age 5 years.

My son was 5 lbs 5 oz (IUGR) at birth and now at 9 months is 22 lbs (about 75%) and 30 inches long (about 90%). Between 6 and 9 months he flip flopped his weight which used to be 90th % and his length which was 70th or so...

Yup. I also had 2. My daughter was a normal birthweight at 7 lbs, 11 oz but my son was a chunk at 9 lbs 5 oz. Both of them grew fast and were/are in the 95-100th% in everything. They are now 5 and 3 and are still in that % range. They are both proportionate, just tall. My son is broad while my daughter is a string bean. It's a bit frustrating at times, for various reasons, but all in all it's all good!

Yep. My daughter was a big baby/toddler. She was wearing size 6 at three and now at 4.5 she's in a size 8. She's really tall but big boned too.
