Hi Mommas, Different type of question.
I just read in the New York Times that there is an outbreak of bedbugs in NYC. :0 We are supposed to go to the Big Apple in two weeks and stay in a hotel for a week. Should be postpone our trip or is the bedbug thing an exagerration? If not, what can we do to ensure our room is not infested??? (we are staying at a four star apartment hotel).

Thank you as usual for your advice.

Jilly

The best thing to do is to contact the hotel and ask them up front if they are having issues with bugs. If they tell you they are not and you go buy a can of bug spray to keep the room sprayed. Use it when ever you are going to be out of the room awhile. But also, if you phone in advance and they tell you there is not an issue with bugs and there is they will have to give you a full refund for you time there.

Yikes! I have never experienced them, but I just read that Ohio always has severe problems too, where local government has to come in and do something about it. I thought the bug was too small to see, but it's actually 1/4 of an inch long and leaves a fecal stain in the crevices of mattresses and small areas. They also get into your luggage and you will take them home with you. You should look it up online so you'll be prepared to make an inspection when you get there. But I would call the hotel and ask them, hopefully they will be honest about it. And maybe make reservations at a different hotel just in case you can't stay at the 1st hotel. Hopefully both won't be infested! I hope you get a response from someone that lives there, that would be great! Sorry I couldn't help more. Good luck!

Well...
a 4 star hotel you would think you should be okay, but you never know and to check to see if you have bed bugs when you get there you would need to take to the sheets off and look in the folds on the edges of the bed they are very small but can be seen.
They do bite but only when you are sleeping. Hope this helped...

Yes there are bedbugs in NYC right now. I guess I would just call your hotel and ask if they have had any outbreaks, and what they are doing to prevent them. Any nice hotel I'm sure has exterminators going like crazy and you don't need to worry! Good luck!

I wouldnt let it stop you. Look up bedbugs online to know what to look for and check out your mattresses just to be sure. if you see a problem ask for different room. I would think they would look for this and replace mattresses as needed. I saw somewhere they recommend taking the bedspread off the bed and folding it and putting it away as this is what they don't wash regularly.

Bedbugs are every where. Even 4 star hotels. There are some sprays on the market you can buy and treat your luggage so you don't bring those critters home with you. Good luck !!.

You can take Sterifab with you and strip the beds and spray them. Also, look behind picture frames. You may also want to keep your suitcases up off the floor.
We travel quite a bit and take Sterifab with us.
You can get some on Amazon.com
Just my two cents,
R.

It's not like they are running rampant in the streets(lol). The reason it has gotten national attention is because a big time law firm had an infestation. That was becasuse they were given old files from a deceased client and the BB's were in the paper. I wouldn't cancel your trip. There is never going to be a time where there isn't a possibility of a BB issue anywhere you go. Just google bed bug info to ease your mind and go have a good time!

there is a bed bug epidemic right now all up here in the upper part of the country. we are having on as well in michigan. i guess you could call and ask them what measures have they taken since the epidemic is there and what are they willing to offer if you things are contaminated. they may do everything in there their power to keep the bugs out but... you know how bugs are. good luck.

I work for a local pest control company. We have a bedbug dept and use dogs. You can look around the bed and see a line where there are brown and red blood spots. I would think NY hotels would be on high alert and keeping things clean at the moment. Bedbugs live in clean homes as well as dirty homes. Call the hotel and see what precautions they are taking.
