Bacon Prices?

My family loves bacon, esp my hubby! We buy Oscar Meyer bacon for $3.48 a package, but this weekend when I went to the store it was $5.48 a package. Needless to say that I didn't purchase any.

Have you noticed any price jumps while grocery shopping? I know prices are going up, but man $2 in one jump.

What can I do next?

We LOVE bacon, but having it every week is just too much of something good, so we've cut back to once or so a month.
We try to load up when Harris Teeter has a 2 for 1 sale, then keep it frozen till we need it.
Last year I thought the pork prices were going haywire due to swine flu fears (it wasn't the case, but it sounded like a good excuse).
This year I'd say a lot has to do with all the farm land flooding up and down the Mississippi and other contributing rivers which have spoiled lots of feed corn.
I'm guessing a lot of other meat (and dairy, and poultry (and eggs)) will be heading up in price for the same reason.
Sounds like a real good year to eat a lot more veggies and give tofu a try.

It's good that you had only paid $3.48 until last week. At my grocery store it's now $6.99-7.99 a lb. If it goes on sale it will be buy one get one free and that's the only time I buy it.
EVERYTHING is going up. This is just the begining, we are going to be seeing major inflation on comodities this year. Hang in there and look for good sales. Stock up when things are cheap.

Yes, too much corn is being diverted to ethanol production. Yeah I know the stupid ethanol adverts say it is not the corn we eat, yeah it is the corn the cows and piggies, and other yummy things we eat, eat. :( Unless we get rid of the subsidies expect it to keep going up.

Cheryl, we were at Costco yesterday it is $12 a pound now!

Oh if someone needs me to connect the rest of the dots, if you plant feed corn in your field you cannot plant something else. That drives down the supply and drives up the cost of everything else they could be growing. Like the sweet corn we eat and use for cereals and such.

Lots of price jumps. When the price of something gets too high, I simply quit buying it if at all possible.

FYI: I used to by the "pretty" bacon like Oscar Meyer. (Pretty= uniform in length and sitting like an advertisement picture in the package.) Now I buy the "bacon ends and pieces". I usually get it for less than half the price of the name brand bacon. And it eats just the same.

Pepsi has come out with a "new" 2-liter bottle. Except the "new " bottle is only 1.5 liters. If enough people buy the 1.5 liter bottle, then soon all the 2 liter bottles will disappear and we will have to pay the 2-liter price for the 1.5 liter bottle.

Cheese and yogurt has also climbed tremendously. So has beef, pork and chicken. Why? Because we use feed corn that used to feed cattle, pigs and chicken (and make eggs) to make gas out of. So the price of food goes up. BTW, the feed corn used to make corn syrup, cereal, canned soda and baked goods.

Good luck to you and yours.

Charmin and Scott toilet paper have reduced the number of sheets per roll, at the same time they increased the price. Of course i've gone to buying all store brand and generic, but with the name brands pulling this bamboozle, I'm sure the generics are right behind them.

One tip for saving money that I haven't seen mentioned is shop in the hood. If you notice when you price things online, at Walmart or other big chains, they always ask your zip code. They give you the price in your area. Some areas support higher prices, where some do not. If you notice when you passed by a barrio, or ghetto area, they have Mercados and small grocery stores that compete with the chains. You can go in there to buy some things much cheaper, but even going to the chain stores in that neighborhood will get you lower priced bacon, because they are competing with the Mercado.

I noticed the bacon prices as well.

I have an 11 year old dog. Before that I had a 16 year old dog. I have been buying Milkbones for TWENTY SEVEN YEARS.

They were FOREVER 2 boxes for $5. Yesterday they were on "sale" for $3.69 per box! Holy cow!

ETA** Some bacon crisis facts from CNBC for those interested--it's actually a GOOD economic sign!
Hog supplies are low because farmers pared back their herds in the past few years due to the recession. At the same time, demand has started to pick up.
“We’re seeing consumers making their very first step toward taking that luxury item,” said Rich Nelson, director of research at Allendale Inc. “They may not be buying steak instead of hamburger, but they will put bacon on their hamburger or other things,” he explained.
Plus, restaurants, still reeling from the recession, are trying to lure back customers with — you guessed it — bacon. They’re offering bacon on everything from burgers to sandwiches and salads.
But don't worry, America, the nation's bacon crisis is almost over.
Prices typically fall after the summer bacon season, Nelson said — and that will likely be the case again this year.

Isn't it horrible how one thing can affect so many things!!! Ripple affect!!!

we purchase the Hormel Bacon at Costco...it's pre-cooked so all I have to do is warm it up...it's $9.99 for 1 lb - but it's COOKED so I get, if I counted correctly - 40 pieces of bacon...much more than we get in the 1lb uncooked!!

Milk is hovering at $4 a gallon here in DC....it WAS at $2.89 in 2009...
Gas is at $3.89 a gallon here...some places lower, some places still over $4 and what gets me?! I see people putting gas in their car at $4 a gallon when I can see a gas station across the street for $3.89!! I'm thinking - are you high? do you really have that much money to waste?!

Where we are it has been high like that for a while now...like over the course of the last few years it went from $2.99 to $4.99. So it wasn't overnight.. at least not here. The stores used to have BOGO sales too, now it is 2 for $7 (so $3.50 per package). I never buy it unless it is on sale.

I work in the industry and yes, all food prices have taken significant increases. Commodities are driving markets up and the outlook still shows some increases unfortunately. And yes, bacon (pork bellies) has been hit the hardest. A lot of people are switching to breakfast sausage which has gone up but not as much.

Everything-prices! While bacon is not something I normally purchase, so can not offer anything on their prices locally...other things are all creeping and leaping higher (well, all but our paychecks of course!)

The sizes of some things are noticeably smaller as well, as someone else mentioned, yet the price stays the smae as the larger size was. Ugh...I am afraid this is just very commonplace now. Be wary when your fave products have "new" packaging. Usually its to distract you from a few lost ounces in its product size!

I only buy the Wright think sliced bacon in the big package. I probably purchase it once a month. I think I paid around $10 last month and it was $13 this past week.

I'm still buying it... it is the best bacon out there in our opinion!!

I only shop at 1 store, I am very brand loyal and I know I pay a premium for my store but it it worth it to me.

Bacon is ridiculously priced. My son loves it, but I only buy it occasionally. I have a hard time spending $6 or $7 on a package of bacon that he will eat in one sitting when I could buy a whole chicken for the same amount and feed us both several meals.

Walgreen's does put Oscar Mayer bacon on sale fairly frequently - like 2 packages for $6 dollars. Then I buy the limit and pop it in the freezer. Hmmm, need to check the sale papers again soon. LOL Now I want bacon!!!

Food prices are crazy. But they got us over a barrel there - we need to eat. I just adjust what we eat based on what is on sale and I buy the bulk of my groceries from Angel Food Ministries...much less expensive than the stores.
