So...my babysitter just called aand she has shingles. The rash is under her shirt, all data suggests that you must come in contact with the rash to catch. Problem is I have an 11 month old. Thoughts?

What can I do next?

Funny thing... I have 3 children and I too have developed shingles and I have a 4 mos. old. Call your ped. Your 11 month old should be getting the chicken pox vaccine next mos, and he should be fine when he gets that. They might even give it to him early. They would not give it to my 4 mos. old because she is too young. As long as the child has the shot or has had Chicken pox before, then he/she should be fine. PLus, he would have to come into direct contact with it by touch, according to my ped. So as long as it is covered, and just to make sure, hands are washed before touching or feeding, evrything should be fine.

I wouldn't take a chance and defer to my pediatrician and do whatever they said.

I had shingles once a few years ago. The thing about shingles is that you can only get it if you've had chicken pox before, as it is a form of the chicken pox virus.

shingles comes as an adult when you've had chicken pox. It can be deadly and can be very painful when you have it. One of the reasons why vaccination is best, cause they think that this will keep you from getting the shingles.

Shingles I think are merely the adult form of chicken pox. Has your son been vaccinated for chicken pox yet? If so , no worries and if not, worst case he gets chicken pox. Good luck!

Good news for you...

Shingles is a viral disease, meaning that one cannot catch it.

Call your family doctor just to double check. Good luck:)

Shingles are not contagious BUT it can give chicken pox to anyone who never had them. My husband had shingles when my daughter was 8 months old (and I never had chicken pox). Our ped said to watch her and keep husband out of contact. Worse case scenario is that your child will get chicken pox. I think the vaccine is at 12 months?? Anyway, the ped said it was more dangerous for me to be in contact with my husband than it was for my daughter. (they said it is very serious for an adult to have chicken pox) I hope this helps! Just keep any eye on your children...once shingles scabs it is no longer a threat. I believe you are correct that it is only an issue if you come in contact with the rash...
