Baby Needs Upper GI X-ray Study--What to Expect?

Well it is no fun!!! I believe she will have to drink a white substance and my baby girl did not like it. Take an empty familiar bottle in case this is also what you may have to do. The test is not long just uncomfortable. You will make it through it. L. Mother of two reflux girls!

Our son Aiden actually had this procedure done at around 6 months. He too was losing weight. He was actually admitted to CHOP and was there for 6 days - feeding tube and all. The upper GI procedure was short and sweet. We were able to be with him while they put him under. I think that at such a young age they really do not know what is going on and do just fine. He actually was never diagnosed with anything at CHOP - (turns out he has a genetic disorder) they sent him home as a Failure to Thrive. All he really needed was Diflucan to get rid of the huge amount of Thrush that he had. Once that was taken care of he was back to eating!

I would strongly encourage you to get a second opinion. This is a very unpleasant test for a tiny baby. Most babies outgrow reflux and most babies do flatten out their growth curve once they hit the 6-9 month mark and become more active crawling/scooting, etc. Anytime a doc wants to order such a yucky test, I very much recommend getting a second opinion.

my daughter had to have this done when she was only 3 weeks old. She was so small she wasn't even on the growth chart. Which is weird but my husband and I are both over 6 feet tall and not skinny people. My oldest daughter was usually topping growth charts. I don't know if the age difference will make a difference or if your doc does it different, but my doc did this: First I had to strip her to a diaper and they put her on a board and bound her hands and feet with gauze. She didn't cry once but I was crying pretty hard. They then gave her some liquid and watch her tummy and all her insides. It didn't take real long, and my doc kept telling me it doesn't hurt, tehy are only crying because they can't move. However, at this age I would wait to do the GI because she will probably outgrow this. My daughter had it very severe and she outgrew it by 14 months, although it was 90% better by 12 months. Is she healthy, does she eat well and well balanced meals, has she been always a small child? She might just be a petite girl. Does she run and play and act like a normal baby besides the reflux? Think about it and good luck!

My son had one when he was just a month. The hardest thing is getting him/her to drink a bottle of the chalk like mix. Then it's relatively easy as long as she cooperates and sits still. Unfortunately the intimidation of the large machine usually causes them to be very still! It is painless so I wouldn't worry too much!

Hi A.. My son had the procedure done when he was 6 months old to rule out any blockages that could have been causing his reflux. Everyone else's advice here is great; I just wanted to add that you may want to bring your little girl in hungry and also bring an empty bottle & nipple. My little guy sucked that chalky goo right down b/c he was hungry - which made the procedure go pretty fast (Just be prepared to breast/bottle feed immediately after the procedure so she gets some real nutrition!). They also poured the substance right into our own bottle and cut the nipple to allow it to flow through. I think having a bottle he was familiar with helped as well. I know how stressful this can be - Good luck to you and your little one!

My daughter is now six month old but when she was two months old she wasn't gaining any weight (she gained 9oz since birth) so the doctor sent her for a lot of test the upper gi was one of them it was very easy they don't let them eat for alittle while then they give them a bottle of this white stuff and take pictures and watch a monitor at the same time it is totally painless...and they usually can discover any problems. quickly.

When My Son was about a Month old, He had to have an Uppeer GI n I too was kinda scared for him being so young but it wasn't so bad, the person taking the x-ray just had him drink some White-chaulky Liquid for the X-ray to see how the Valve to stomach was working... Of course in Mine n My Son's case He had PYLORIC STENOSIS - where the Pyloric Muscle was thicken around the Valve to the stomach causing a blockage making Him PROJECTILE (throw-up). After his Surgery at 6 wks old, He also was diagnosed with Reflux n was put on Liquid Zantac, which He threw up... So about 3 months old my Son had another upper GI. My son is now 18 months n is doing good.
Your Daughter will be fine! You will be with her the whole time.

My son is having an endoscopy at Dupont on May 2...he will be put under with general an...the GI did not want to do the upper GI since it is not as accurate...did they tell you that you may need to also do an endoscopy? My son vomited solids since he was 7 months - he is now 3 and has poor weight gain and limited diet...

When my son was just 2 and a half weeks old, he had to get an upper GI done, due to him having pyloric stenosis. All they'll do is have you feed this chalky substance to her. After about a half hour, at least in our case, you'll be headed down to the x-ray room and they'll have you hold her while they do the x-rays. It seems worse than what it really is. There is nothing to worry about. Now she may cry and fuss, but no baby likes to be held down. Just comfort her and talk to her and she'll be just fine.
