Baby Needs Glasses

We just found out that my 22-month-old daughter is very farsighted and needs glasses. I don't know anybody who has been in this situation, and was wondering if anyone out there has advice about a)where to go to get affordable (but good quality) glasses, and b)how to get her to wear the glasses. I've heard that if they need them, they don't have a problem wearing them, but I just have a feeling it's not going to be that easy!

What can I do next?

We have no insurance and several of us wear glasses, so we go to America's Best. Here is alink:

http://www.twopair.com/

For $70 you get two pairs of glasses and that includes the exam, frames, and lenses. They even have a kids' package that covers accidents. You can also upgrade to any of the extras you want like tinting or transitions or designer frames. Anyhow, we have been going there for years and they are a great deal.

Hi M.,

I worked in Optical for 7 years and what I saw worked best for parents is 1. Let her pick them out--I know that she is 2 but they are still opinionated! :)(I have a 2 yr old too).

Maybe pick out a few you can handle and give her a choice.

Make sure to get flex hinges and a warranty as they will get beat up.

Also, it helps to buy some cheap dollar store glasses that she can play with to get used to them and also if you wear some glasses too--even have your other family members wear them for a while around her.

EyeMasters has the best prices--in my opinion.

Anyway, I hope this helps--it will all work out!

We go to Costco who has a replacement policy for kids glasses. WE did not have to buy the warranty, we only discovered it when my son broke his frames, they simply replaced them.

My twin girls have worn glasses since they were about six months old. We went through about 4 pairs a year until we found See Saw Optical. Its at the Banner Desert Hospital outside building. They have great glasses called Solo Bambini. They're all plastic with plastic lenses. My girls have not been able to break a pair yet. The price is a little expensive, the frames are 75 dollars but the lenses are more. We end up paying roughly 250 per pair, but they last forever. (Our insurance doesn't pay any of it either.) I'd check with your insurance to see if there is anywhere they will cover glasses or if they'll reimburse you if you go outside the plan. Hope this helps.

M.,

My son needed glasses very young and I thought he would never wear them. What people have said is true... Any time he would try to touch them (out of curiosity) in the first two days, I just distracted him with something else. After that he wore them because he could tell the difference and liked being able to see.

You will need to buy the warrenty wherever you get the glasses, though. Kids sure are rough on them (I have four in glasses!)
