My son just turned 3 months today. I have been told that giving him some not alot but a little baby food #1 is OK for him. His pediatrician told me that I can give him cereal because he is eating so much. Has anyone had to start giving food early and was there any complications? My son drinks 6-8 oz every 3 hours and the cereal does not seem to fill him up. Does any one have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi D.
My daughter is 4 months old and her doctor had me start her on cereal at 3 months and now we have started veggies. He suggested the orange veggies first then go on to green and fruit after that. He also reccommended to feed her 1 veggie for 3-4 days before moving onto a new one just incase of any reactions. Ever since we have strted the cereal and food she seems to be more satisfied and is sleeping through the night which is a huge bonus!!

Good luck!
J.

I would wait on the baby food because baby's digestive system is not prepared for it yet. Try making the cereal a little thicker. Also, at three months, he is probably going through a growth spurt which will make him eat more AND more often. Just be a little patient, and his body will adjust. I hope this helps ease your concerns. I did work with WIC and I do know about these growth spurts since I've breastfed four children (so far) for at least two years each.

I can totally relate. My son is also 3 months old. I just started him on stage one foods. It seems to be going over very well. He loves the bannanas and it seems to do really well on his stomach. No problems so far. I mix a little rice cereal in there and it really seems to satisfy my baby. Just like everyone before me said though I would stick to one type of food for like a week to make sure that he does well with them and has no reaction. But I am confident that your baby will be fine. Hope all works for you.

I started kinda early giving my kids baby food and it didn't harm them at all. Just when you do give him food or cereal, give him that for a week and watch and make sure he doesn't have an allergic reaction.

I started my son on cereal at 3 mos and after the 3-5 days of eating it to make sure he wasn't allergic to it I started on other foods stage 1 of course. My son had no problems with the food in fact he loves it. But the possible problems when food in introduced early are: more allergies especially if you or the baboes father has any food allergies, a fatter baby which in our case was a good thing our son was very small at birth. but a really fat baby is not a good thing. as far as I know that's it for bad stuff!
hope that helps

It is a growth spurt. Don't worry about it. My dd did that at 3 months too. In fact all 3 of my kids did this around 3, 6, and 9 months. Then they all of a sudden went back to their normal eating habits.

She ate 7 oz. every 3 hours on the dot and to the exact amount for about a week. So I added a little bit of cereal to her bottles and then to her diet. Then she all of sudden went back to her reg. eating of about 6 oz every 3 1/2-4 hours. Then it was time to start introducing baby food (6 mnths) so we were changing our eating habits once again.

It will be like that till they are pretty big (school age) so you just learn to go with the flow. ;-)

Oh, no complications with plain baby cereal. Baby food is another story and you should only introduce one new thing a week so you can monitor for problems.

Good luck,
ts

I have not had to feed my little ones babyfood so early. But I have been told that cereal is ok. If you are going to give him baby food I would try to stick with blain foods. But I feel like cereal would fill him more so than babyfood. The cereal has more substance. And it depends on how much cereal your giving him. And if he is waiting 3 hours to eat again I think I would stick with the plan you have going. I would worry about other foods if he wasnt waiting 3 hours to eat.

Good Luck.

I started putting a little cereal in my son's bottle to help keep him full longer at about 3 mths and around 3 1/2 - 4 mths I began giving him some cereal after his bottle if he was hungry. It seemed to work fine with him and me.

Hi D., I think if your son is drinking that much formula, he is definately ready for solids. He probably isn't being satisfied with formula alone anymore. I would suggest giving him stage 1 foods with cereal mixed in. Start out w/1 jar for each meal and see how he responds to it. My son will usually eat about 2 jars at each meal now. Sweet potatoes is a good thing to start with, and remember to give him the same food 2-3 times in a row in case he has a reaction.

My son is now 10 months old and started on his rice cereal at 2 months. I could NOT keep him fed! He was drinking 8oz bottles every 1-2 hours. The rice eventually helped him slow down on eating so many bottles. He had no complications with it. He has always been an early eater. He started on bananas and other easy stage one foods by the time he was 4 months. Now he already eats dinner that I make and everything. Just remember that as you are giving your baby solids to start a new one no sooner that 3-4 days from the last new food. This will help you to see how your baby reacts to each new food!

Bananas are a great starter food. It seems to be very easy on their tummys!

I hope this has helped!! Good luck with your baby!
