Baby Carrier Recommendation - Big Baby

Can anyone recommend a good baby carrier for a BIG baby?

I need one with back support that enables me to turn him face out without him flopping around - and I have never been able to get the hang of "back carry" so I need a front loader. I have a Baby Bjorn that I carried my first son in until he was about 16 months old (he's small) but son #3, well, he's 3 months old and the Baby Bjorn all ready seems too small. And though he's not really ready quite yet, he prefers facing out so he can see, so that will be the best option from here on out.

THANKS!

What can I do next?

I ended up getting the Belle. It's some effort to get my baby situated properly, but if I get that right, the rest is a breeze. It seems like I'll be able to use it into toddler-hood, though since he's big and I am not, I may be peering over his head then! : )

The Belle is locally made and you can get it at the Giggling Green Bean on Tennyson and at EcoPolitan across from the BelMar area in Lakewood.

www.modestymatters.net will make you a baby wrap similar to the M* wrap for less than half the price...just go to the "contact us" page and ask them. Those are the best type of baby wrap, though! Even weight distribution & support...longevity for momma...love it!

No one mentioned The Freehand Carrier ?? I have tried the Ergo and Beco and they both face inward which my 9 month hated by the time he reached 6 months old, so I found this carrier and its AMAZING !!! It faces inward for newborns or to 35lbs and then it faces outward for the nosey children like my son and its back carrying too. The owner Melissa is a local WAHM (which I love even more) so she makes them in Denver. She makes mei teis and also the structured carrier, which is what I have and LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Its "like" a Baby Bjorn except it disributes the weight evenly in your hips so it so far has not hurt my back or shoulders and my son is 21lbs !!!
Her website is www.togetherbe.com
Good luck, but I think you will love this way more than the Beco or the Ergo and personally I hate the moby, my son has never liked it.

I, too, had a huge baby and never found anything he and I would both be comfortable using. I had the Baby Bjorn-too small, a sling-cut off the circulation in my neck when I tried to use it because baby was so heavy!!, and a back carrier-too much trouble. The only thing I would suggest is trying one of those wrap things I see a lot of moms using now. It looks like just a long piece of material, but somehow you wrap it around and it keeps the baby in place. Good luck!

and babies should be worn facing their mommies or papas because it allows them to read our faces, developmentally hugely important!

I have a moby wrap and I LOVE it! There are soo many different positions to carry/wrap in. I've "worn" my son for a 3 hour zoo trip with no problems!

My son loved to face out too, and we used the Baby Bjorn Active until he was 20 lbs and my poor shoulders couldn't bear the weight any more. I also read how the baby is basically hanging from the crotch area, which sounds a little painful.

The Ergo carrier is designed to have your baby face you. I was concerned my son wouldn't like it but he loved it, because he was able to sit very comfortably and even nap or nurse. He liked it better than the Baby Bjorn. It distributes the weight on wide shoulder padding and a thick belt, so you will barely feel your baby's weight. It was very popular among hikers back in '07 when I purchased it for my one year old, but now it's become mainstream. I loved it too, as it let use it for hours at a time!

This carrier has a high weight limit, so it can be used with toddlers too. With baby #2 on the way I bought the new "infant insert 2" for newborns to 4-6 months, so I can get more use out of it.

On this site, they write "While wearing babies in the vertical front carry position, ERGObaby advocates facing the baby inward, towards the parent. Dr. Evelin Kirkilionis describes it best in her book 'A Baby Wants To Be Carried':

'Infants in outward-facing orientations can’t turn away from surrounding stimuli...that become overwhelming. In this position the baby cannot make eye contact with his or her parent to evaluate facial expressions, social cues, and so forth to make assessment of the situation. Only choose a baby carrier that allows your child to face you...never out.' "

Moby! My son was a really big guy too and the Moby was incredibly comfortable!

Good luck!

C T is describing a Moby. There are other wraps too, but google Moby and look into it. Many people complain that they stretch out, so that might be a concern with a big baby. he might start at your chest but be at your belly by the end of a trip to your local gardens. Still it is an option, I have one and I like it.

Maya ring sling is another. It won't stretch and you can wear your baby on your hip as an option. I also have one and like it.

Beco and Ergo are very popular too. These are more mainstream looking (similar to Bjorn) and are supposed to offer better support.

I loved my ergo, but they make one called the lille baby that is like the ergo and I think the baby can face out
